39 yrs in radio- still learning! I run Alfred -the UK's only all-speech, hyperlocal FM created from a daily small-town news podcast. My 'thing' is a small market, listener-centred radio/ local news. Set up/owned Radio Pembrokeshire & Radio Scilly.
Good picture painting and storytelling makes great radio with a personal connection AI services or jukeboxes can't offer. Here's Paula White on BBC Shropshire yesterday, A considered, structured, relatable link. You can 'see' what Paula describes. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Paula puts a smile on your face with great guests, big events and all the music you love.

Just confirmed the last of 18 Xmas Day show guests. We'll add timely content on the day. It's a small town, and I know people who will be alone. Our job is to offer engaging, relatable content with warmth and a sense of shared local community- to get people through 25th Dec.

Our listeners are incredibly kind. Greengrocer Nick: “I’m giving you a box to fill with fruit and vegetables for free, to thank you for Alfred's local news. If you don’t fill it yourself, I’ll do it” Overwhelming kindness proves our little town's radio station is valued.

A challenging lunchtime local news hour. Lots of really short stories—nothing chunky—have kept me on my toes. You'll notice a 5min underrun. I'm waiting to talk to local Syrians when they return from an event at around 1.15! Hope the roads are okay. BTW Boobs is a town charity!

Red weather warning to hit Wales. The last 24 hours of Radio Wales breakfast Facebook- no mention of weather. Instead…Nick Knowles says he won't be at the Strictly final because of his injury. Scott Mills found out how panto hits differently in Swansea. Goons.

I've no idea how many people are tuning in to our tiny station in a rural town of 9,000 at 9:00 pm. But I've just re-recorded the 9 pm local news hour after 3 listener messages, advising our main road was closed due to a crash - b4 999 services arrived. Our listeners are great.

Loving the return of Max 80s digital radio, thanks to John Ryan, on DAB in the Northeast and streaming even in rural N Dorset! It's the 80s as I remember it, rather than the blander, predictable, repetitive 'first LP of the Now Album' 80s, that group stations churn out. tunein.com/radio/Max-80...

Always take a branded mic with you- everywhere. I bumped into an event leader who is making a big announcement Sunday. And I only nipped into town to buy cheese.

When I lived in Pembrokeshire, I used to avoid certain pubs for Sunday lunch, because I'd hear voice tracked me, blaring out. I sympathise with QFM presenters in Belfast. The speakers around the shopping centre by their base play the station. Great PR- no escape from a bad link, tho :)

In Derry, for my bday. Been anchoring our storm coverage since 6 am. Local contacts and knowledge are more important than recording location. proof-Just had this -‘thanks for all your updates over the storm. you are the only place we can rely on for correct information”

My glamorous small-town radio life. I’m on holiday for my birthday, but I’m working remotely at 5 am—editing a bulletin for 6 am in the hotel bathroom so I don’t wake the other half. Travel next, after a shower

I'm listening to a new-ish community radio station that has been rebranded to play upbeat and tacky 90s pop dance music. What would you call a format that sounds like funfair ride music? They should have called it 106.1 The Waltzer.
