Seems like a bad argument from them. A businesswoman doesn't describe a woman who is business, but a trans woman describes a woman who is trans. Likewise you wouldn't say "police woman" or "spokes woman" since police and spokes aren't adjectives, but you would say "tall woman" and not "tallwoman". You may be using a regional term, but the regional term is still grammatically incorrect. It's also funny that their counter examples are specifically terms where the person is assumed male by default. Like yeah, historically you would write woodsman and fireman and policeman,etc. but that's because those terms were so assumed to be talking about men that it became the default. There's a reason we use terms like police officer and fire fighter now
