Hey, Bluesky: do you have a class policy for LLMs like ChatGPT? Would you be willing to share with my department?

We are interested in personal policies, departmental policies, and/or school-wide policies!

Today’s geo-poetry delight - ‘Kjng Coal’s Levee’ by John Scafe, published in 1818, as a ‘jeu d’esprit’ with geological notes.

By the 3rd edn (1819), this included a ditty on Baron Basalt’s tour of Albion

Had a riveting end to NAVSA—Juliet Shields showing how Black writers repurposed W. Scott; Ella Mershon analyzing the failure of progress in Tennyson; @benjaminmorgan.bsky.social tracing env. ethic in urban cacotopias; and @lizmiller.bsky.social considering the afterlives industrial landscapes.

A fascinating morning at NAVSA—Mary Bowden critiquing the nativist vegetal resilience in War of the Worlds, Jessica Valdez showing how the Chinese and Chartists were described similarly, and Rachel Teukolsky analyzing the representation of the Haitian revolution in H. Martineau’s work.

Yesterday afternoon at NAVSA was busy for me, so I missed posting about it. Heard a great paper from Jiwon Min on Isabella Bird’s travels in Korea. And I gave my paper on a Chartist poet’s utopian vision of coal and steam.

First few panels of NAVSA done! I was the most struck by a discussion of environmental gothic and weird fiction led by Jed Mayer and @siobhancarroll.bsky.social — are these genres ‘useful’ for understanding environmental crises past, present, or future?

I’m excited to be at NAVSA 2023. Typically, I tweet/skeet/post my way through conferences, but best I can tell that’s not a thing on BlueSky?Regardless, I’ll broadcast what I can and hope that I run into those of you who are here there.

My institution just switched to Canvas and I am so excited for how discussion boards work now! They might not be the best, but at least I can get better feedback to students faster.

Hi everyone: delighted to share that Petrocultures is coming to LA/USC May 11-15. Please share the CFP and consider proposing a paper or panel! We've got all sorts of exciting stuff planned. https://www.petrocultures2024.com/los-angeles.html. ****Proposal deadline is Sept. 15****

A question for energy humanities folk out there—I've been invited to offer a lecture on petrocultures for a climate change class and I need to chose media to assign. What are some petroculture media (creative, scholarly, otherwise) you might assign to a general audience of undergraduate students?

Well, I was rejected from a grant recently. I know this is hardly a surprising outcome; I’m not in shambles from the rejection. Many thoughtful scholars and strong projects (especially in the humanities) don’t get funding. But as non-tenure track faculty...

While I was hardly a good or frequent Twitter user, it certainly did feel like an important space where we could share humor, successes, and challenges. It has been sad to see it disintegrate. https://www.vox.com/culture/2022/11/22/23466381/leaving-twitter-x-saying-goodbye-social-media
