Men in balaclavas set fire to a mosque in East Sussex last night. It's only appearing on the BBC's local coverage, rather than its main national headlines, despite coming just a week after the (also under-reported) firebombing of an asylum hotel in London last week

The final honor guard for Pope Francis included migrants, prisoners, transgender people, the homeless and others selected by the Vicariate of Rome as a symbol of the late pope’s mission of inclusion and outreach.

It's funny how when you ask them why they think Pope Francis was "too woke" and request specific examples, they always wound up describing Christ's teachings without a hint of self-awareness.

O Lord, grant us a quiet night and a peaceful end. #Compline prayers for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis. May he rest in peace and rise in glory with Christ. 📿🙏🕊️✝️💕

Meeting your heroes is often disappointing, but the chance to talk with Elif Shafak, to hear her beautiful stories, and to share my story of how one of her books helped change my life was very special. @sevenoaksbookshop.bsky.social

I don’t buy books on Amazon. Leftover from my previous life as an indie bookseller.

If you are freshly anti-Bezos, some of my favorite options:

📕 Buy Locally! Hopefully you still have a local bookshop.

Today, both Candlemas and Imbolc help us to celebrate light’s return, a reminder of hope and renewal. As Unitarians, these festivals might invite us to embrace inner growth, honouring the divine, and the human need for transformation. In darkening times it is the hope for light that holds us.

Today we might reflect on the life of Saint Thomas Aquinas, a scholar who understood that faith and reason are not opposites but partners in the pursuit of truth. As Unitarians we remember his quiet insistence on evidence, reflection, and the pursuit of understanding through both heart and mind.

That footage of Bishop Mariann Budde made me properly tear up. Her courage and compassion sets the bar high for the rest of us to speak truth to power - not just indirectly but face to face ❤️

Those present at the inauguration were mostly (if not all) white, rich, and males wearing ties. Trump’s core supporters were left out in the cold.
Think about it.

I left X to escape the angry political arguments. I found Bluesky talking about books, art, poetry and faith. It was wonderful. A couple of months later and my timeline is increasingly filled with angry politics.

As the year turns, we let go of that which weighs us down, the old hurts and regrets. With quiet resolve, we instead carry forward the lessons learned, stepping into the unknown, hearts open, ready to begin again.

Hanukkah’s light flickers quietly, a small defiance against the dark. It’s a reminder for all that, even in hardship, we can shine—each tiny spark, a gesture of resilience, a whisper of hope in the cold.

As the fourth candle flickers, we pause in the hush of Advent’s waiting, where time bends and the heart learns to be still. In the space between breaths, we prepare for what is yet to come, believing in unseen light.

I do worry about the prioritisation of resources by a faith traditions - the simplistic ‘feed the hungry’ or ‘spend it on ourselves’ argument. Yet the recreation of sacred spaces will bring centuries of reflection, renewal and commitment from those attending. My visit to Notre Dame fed my soul.

The darkness of December continues to deepen. Yet, as we approach the Solstice, Advent reminds us of the light to come. In this season of patient waiting, may we hold hope, trusting that even in the darkest moments, renewal is on the horizon.

On Human Rights Day, we stand at the intersection of past struggles and future hope. Each life, each story, is sacred. May we be the architects of a world where freedom and dignity are not privileges, but the birthright of all.
