They knew what happened in China and that they would have to shoot on their own people...The generals didn't pull the trigger and therefore no one died! The peaceful revolution is celebrated to this day! It was a big success and tore down the wall! The people united and had power to end a regime!!!

My parents only went there with one person, never together, in order to not get caught both. The people blocked the infrastructure, chanted 'freedom' or 'we are the people'. There were big prayers in churches, which was an affront to the socialist party...The police and arme were under pressure...

100 000 people were on the streets at the peak of the movement at the famous Monday demonstrations! They were afraid of arrests, being thrown into prison or military violence in any form, since in China, I guess Peking, was a bloody massacre of student protests not too long before...

History of my family and of hope: my parents went to the streets in 1989 in Leipzig, when the people were fed up with 40 years of GDR with a poor economy, Soviet governance, no freedom of speach, government espionage of its citizens, recruting spies in your family, no rights to travel etcpp.
