For all that I pride myself on trying to be objective, as a leader I have found myself from time to time dismissing good ideas or critiques because it was so-and-so AGAIN. And you get so tired of so-and-so.

It is not a sin to be wrong about something with your mind. It is sinful to be hateful toward others in your heart (Matt. 5:22). It is never sinful to love someone, and *true* love can never be done in excess.

Tonight in philosophy, we asked what a human being was from a biblical perspective. We all agreed that our most important feature is that we are all created in the image of God and thus have a certain inherent dignity. No one is roadkill -- even the most evil person.

Circular reasoning is when we assume something is right in order to argue that it is right. Related would be assuming a source is truthful in order to justify the cause of that source.

Freedom of speech obviously means more than me being able to say what I want. It means that those who disagree with me are free to say what they like as well.

The problem with the concept of a theocracy is that there is always someone interpreting God for the people. Except in biblical times, theocracies turn out to be rule by priests who claim to speak for God.

How paradigms work. We focus on data we think supports or can fit into our paradigm. We dismiss, ignore, or don't even see "naughty data" that works against our paradigm. Truth seekers try to account reasonably for all the data, and are willing to alter or change their paradigms when appropriate.

Vision without operations goes nowhere. Operations without vision goes nowhere meaningful.

When you are in the majority, being told to treat others as equals feels like oppression.

My FB feed ranges from one extreme to the other, but surely all wish for the good of the nation and its people. We just often disagree on what that looks like. Some believe that God has finally delivered the US from the hold of Satan. Some believe dark and sinister things are happening right now.

Romans 8:28 is not about the rest of my life on earth. It's not even focused on me as an individual.

Why does God allow evil and suffering? It's ultimately above our pay grade. Some say it's so we can grow by making hard decisions. Some say it's because freedom of our wills is good even though it can lead to bad consequences -- consequences which are sometimes self-inflicted judgment.

I don't know if I have always been grateful for the wonderful life I've led. I was born a US citizen, so I didn't have to work to be here. I didn't have to take a test. It was so easy, and I didn't even know it. I didn't know our immigration system was broken because I hardly knew it existed.

It's the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. In Band of Brothers the people in Landsberg were in denial that such things were happening in the camp. In the city of Dachau itself, they made the town go through the camp so they couldn't deny it. We believe what and who we want to believe.

I've found it intriguing to ask, how might God have created sentient life differently on other planets. His nature is the same -- love, holiness. But how might he have been creative so as not to get bored?

I know the arguments against the concept of a color blind society. But it seems to me it is the goal most of us can agree on. We just have to pursue it with open eyes. That's my proposal for this MLK day.

As a scholar, I try to be suspicious of myself if an interpretation is a little too convenient or too nicely supports my biases. Am I missing something? Am I not seeing something I don't want to see? When the evidence always vindicates you, you probably aren't being completely honest with yourself.

I watched an advertisement last night about children and young people with muscular dystrophy. I hope most people -- and all who call themselves Christians -- would watch such a piece and be glad for the work of such organizations and those who care for the infirm.

The drive to spiritual renewal is often driven by the subconscious pricking of the Holy Spirit. We may not even realize consciously what is causing the holy unease. Sometimes it is worry or uncertainty or even subconscious guilt.

If you've read much of anything I've said, you'll know that I think humans are mostly irrational creatures. Our minds are finite and fallen, skewed in their view of the world. This includes our understanding of the Bible.

Here's an experiment. Climate scientists have been saying for some time that we should expect more and more extreme weather events. Let's put out a fleece. If there is another catastrophic weather event this year, we might start believing them more. If there isn't, we will ramp up the doubt. Deal?

When I'm conversing about women in ministry, I often hear that I'm messing around with the clear interpretations of Scripture. But what we find clear usually is based on the traditions we are in.

How can we turn the societal temperature down? How can we get ourselves out of our apocalyptic, squid games mindset?
