Step 1: refuse to draw any distinction between "phantasm, notion, species, or whatever it is which the mind can be employed about in thinking".

In all seriousness, for all the 17th century texts I read, I don’t think I’ve seen this meaning of ‘eviction’ before!

Back in 1652, God got a little behind on the rent.

Quite the collection of careers....
(Found by accident on ODNB, while trying to keep the various #c18 John Clarkes straight.)

Samuel Clarke's little brother John wrote several works defending S's views on space, time, and God, as well as editing S's posthumous works. So I was really interested in this abit of sibling disagreement...until I just discovered this is a completely different John Clarke.

Reading John Clarke’s 1719 Boyle lectures, it often seems like he really just wants to talk about science, but he’s supposed to be doing apologetics, so he makes up weird fictional atheists so the science he wants to talk about can be an answer to their objections.

I was using an English translation of Constantius’s writings from the Oxford World Classics series. The front of the book had a portrait of Constantius. It looked a lot like this portrait of Montaigne, but with more hair. /END

Unstaged photo from my desk this week. To the best of my knowledge "Advice from a Huckleberry" is NOT the title of a section of the Critique of Pure Reason.

You know you've really made it as a public intellectual when your latest pamphlet is the subject of a debate between a theologian and a cavalry officer.

Outline slide for an upcoming talk at Hampden-Sydney College.

I'll be presenting overlapping material in a panel for the online C-APA, organized by @Helenreflects & Kristen Irwin.

The philosophers who endorse the listed claims include (at least) Leibniz, Masham, & Berkeley.

Really interesting that George Hickes (1684) connects popular sovereignty with polygenesis.
