Vincent Van Gogh was born 172 years ago today. He started out as a preacher in a coal-mining village. He was really bad at it but living in poverty among the miners and their families inspired him to start painting.

This is his drawing of miners’ wives carrying sacks of coal.

Barnsley Main Colliery, ceased operations entirely in 1991. Barnsley Main was connected to the site of the worst mining disaster in England, which claimed the lives of 383 victims.
