It’s OK, I’m friends with enough academics to appreciate the bullet I dodged 😂

I considered doing a PhD on the Picts and was dissuaded by my dissertation supervisor, who indicated that making a good job of it would involve learning Latin, Old Irish, Old Welsh and Anglo-Saxon.

Swiftly reconsidered my career.

It is indeed. In Banff or Macduff though, it’s a pyulie.

Wi nae obvious etymology I can think o, apart fae the Gaelic ‘faoileag’
December 9, 2025 at 12:18 PM
Likely. There’s heaps o Gaelic in Doric.

Fit’s the Banff word for a seagull? 😂

Falklands = basically Shetland & we’ve got one of those already.

One of the many good things about independence is that we’ll be able to resolve a number of random territorial disputes (at our end, anyway) pretty much instantly, at negligible cost.

“Falklands? Gibraltar? Cyprus? BIOT? Meh.”

That’s pretty much why folk with any money in Britain put it in property.

I can think of two things that might make a difference. Easily understandable stats on the likelihood of an investment going tits up; and some sort of baseline FCA guarantee for stocks & shares ISAs (both v. difficult)
November 29, 2025 at 9:16 PM
You’re preaching to the choir here at this point, I’ve got money in an ETF & I’m v. conscious it knocks the interest on a cash ISA out of the park.

But *I’m* risk-averse, and culturally, most working class folk in Britain are even more risk averse than me. It’s them you’d need to persuade.

Hindsight’s 20/20. I put my spare money into property & it’s worked out pretty well thus far.

We all have mandatory workplace pensions now, so we’re all gambling to some extent, it just doesn’t ‘feel’ like it (unless you open your pension app & Trump’s said something stupid thats cost you a grand)
November 29, 2025 at 3:48 PM
Speaking as *I’d* have seen it in my 20s in 2008 - “Even if I figure out HOW to put this into the stock market, there’s an unknown & unknowable risk it goes up in flames.”

To a deeply cynical population that’s not an acceptable level of risk.

- Most of us know less than nothing about it
- In an age where it’s finally been ‘democratised’ (apps) many now have little spare money for anything
- We’ve been through multiple ‘throw yourself off a building’ financial events which are lodged in the popular consciousness

My experience, anyway

If scattering ashes at the top of a hill, be v. careful.

The wind changed direction when I threw my handful, and I ended up with a mouth/nose/eyeful of my Granny and Granda.

Which they would have gotten a great laugh at, to be fair.

I know a few French folk and their children in NE Scotland, & you just wouldn't know unless you asked.

They're neither a visible, nor audible minority, and they're as likely to live in the countryside as the city. They also tend to marry locals, so any 'distinctiveness' vanishes quickly.

I fail to see how this would be even vaguely cost effective compared to, say, a tamper-proof ankle tag that delivers massive, incapacitating electric shocks if you try to leave the house.
