Letting Donald Trump ignore those limits—whether it’s foreign money, gifts, or personal enrichment—sets a terrible precedent for the future.

I agree with you—and I really appreciate how clearly you’re framing this. The Constitution and the rule of law only matter if they apply to everyone, including presidents.

When adults turn fear into policy, kids pay the price for something they don’t understand and didn’t cause. That’s the tragedy.

That’s exactly the cruelty of it—you can’t explain it to a five-year-old in a way that makes sense, because it doesn’t make sense. A child hears “jail” and thinks they did something wrong.

Years later, Donald Trump rewarded him with the role of Secretary of Labor—the very department tasked with protecting workers and combating exploitation.

That’s exactly the question that should be getting more attention. Alex Acosta, as a U.S. Attorney under George W. Bush, approved the 2008 sweetheart deal that let Jeffrey Epstein evade serious accountability.

Terror as policy: Current practices by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement rely on fear and intimidation. Communities describe these actions as terrorizing, not protective.

That expansion allows operations well beyond immediate border zones, even if it clashes with the spirit of the original intent.

You’re asking a fair question. While U.S. Customs and Border Protection was originally framed around border enforcement, over time its authority has been expanded through statutes, regulations, and court interpretations—especially under the umbrella of Department of Homeland Security.

Terror and trauma: Current ICE practices are inflicting widespread fear in communities. The psychological harm—especially PTSD, anxiety, and depression among children, families, and bystanders—is real, documented, and growing.

Stories like that work precisely because they exaggerate just enough to show where apathy, polarization, and power unchecked can lead.

I felt the same way. It’s unsettling how hard it is to draw comfort from “it’s just fiction” anymore—because the themes feel uncomfortably plausible, and not confined to one country.

Completely agree—this really is a must-read. The piece in The New Yorker captures something deeply troubling about how politics is increasingly intruding on spaces that were meant to celebrate art, creativity, and shared culture.
