Politics lecturer and researcher specialising in comparative Voter Registration. Also found writing on Politics of Football and Icelandic Politics.

Occasional drummer, very occasional poet, very very occasional midfielder.
I do like it though. Makes a big difference having a screen and a place to meet students. Going to be very useful after reading week as supervision and assignments gather pace.

After some structural issues to the building, we finally have a semi-permanent office. I decided to splash-out on a fancy name plate to celebrate.

Allowing the Independence party to filibuster and then, (as the main opponents to the new constitution) form the next coalition can be seen as one of the most rueful moments in recent icelandic political history

2nd week of suggesting 3 political songs to go with the lectures. Very much enjoying this

My whole life has been pretty much based around music and politics. I owe it almost entirely to Manic Street Preachers. Only just started the new book on them, but it is excellent so far.

Job stuff: I will be the Comparative and British Politics lecturer at Liverpool John Moores for the upcoming semester. Looking forward to the challenge. (Sadly, all my lectures will not be in this converted chapel)

You have to scan your face to access messaging on this app? Getting ridiculous this

You've been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are trying to rescue you.

I'm watching Twisted Metal (as a tonal shift from rewatching all of Twin Peaks last week). It is fun, but I would not be rescued.

In the Elections Crew group chat (don't deny that you are also in one), we have finally allowed ourselves to turn our attention to the Dutch election as a treat. How many parties will make up the next coalition?

Saying farewell to me desk today. I was sat here for the majority of my PhD and time TAing here.

It was here in Quad D on the 4th floor of the ALB, that I've, oddly, felt happiest in the past few years.

Time to let someone else enjoy it and time for me to find work beyond being a TA.

Not often you get an insight into local government and nuclear apocalypse in one film. But MY WORD, the film is bleak!

This was my first, and it turns out everyone's last, EPSA. Saw some great presentations, got some helpful feedback, and met some lovely people.
Such large conferences are good for helping you realise the sort of academic you do (and don't) want to be. It was a useful (and sweaty) experience.

After being in Hungary, then back to my corner of NW England at 3 am Tuesday, then only arriving in Madrid after midnight, I ask you to please come and see me at EPSA on Friday.
I'll be awake, entertaining, and informative, I promise

Here is mine and @profsob.bsky.social abstract to lure you

Must be hard being a 19 year old at the moment. You've got Doué running the CL final and Mayulu bagging one, whilst you're (occasionally) sitting in class wondering what a paragraph is and whether ChatGPT can do referencing.

The already massive gulf between working class and middle class pupils is only widening.

A few years ago, when I was staying in Reykjavik for a few months, there was a period of unusually good weather - consistently hitting a very high 14°c in May

Today, I heard from friends there that temperatures are 22°c. Which toes the line between being a welcome change and oddly terrifying

Here we can see that our registration system has more in common with countries classed in the electoral democracy 'grey zone' (according to V-Dem, 2024)

As a follow-on of mine and @profsob.bsky.social work in the Guardian - here is a graph detailing where Britain stands in comparison with other liberal democracies. This is based on automaticity, deadline, portability of registration, and preregistration.

We had a great event this week arranged by UKICE (whose project is sadly being brought to an end by ESRC).
Arranged by @robfordmancs.bsky.social & @anandmenon.bsky.social & me a bit.
It is great being able to get so many ECRs (from across the world) doing fascinating work, together in Manchester.
