I didn't wake up last night to see the lunar eclipse... 😬
But I thought I'd share my best lunar eclipse picture. Taken at @mcdonaldobs.bsky.social in 2022 with a GoPro while using the HJST, one of the #astrophotography images I'm pretty proud of. 🔭

Not a big fan of windy days, but the Sun looks really nice this evening. The dust gives lots of pretty colors. Kinda #astrophotography I guess?

So long #AAS245, as always it was a whirlwind!
Great catching up with old friends and making new ones. Leaving with lots of ideas and excitement about #stars and the #milkyway 🔭
Plus, great views from the airport.

The space shuttles are my Pokemon - I gotta see them all!

This is 3 of 4 now!

When you're at #AAS245 you have to embrace the culture and wear nerdy socks, right?!
Thanks @sciencesocks.bsky.social for helping me represent!

At #AAS245?
Not here and want to keep up with the goings on?
Here's a starter pack to follow for all things meeting related!
(Thanks @emily.space!)

On my way to #AAS245 to talk about #stars and stuff in the #milkyway!

Anyone know this skyline?

Added a new member to the family this weekend. The shelter we got him from named him Minx, but being only 3 months old, obviously I had to convince my family to rename him something #stars related, so... Meet Nova!
He's still pretty shy, but I'm sure he'll take over the house in no time 😂

Had a campus visit for my oldest child today @utaustin.bsky.social, beautiful day and campus!
And I'm very excited she's thinking @texasscience.bsky.social and maybe @chemistry.bsky.social specifically...
It's not astro (I'll still hoping @mcdonaldobs.bsky.social) but very happy it's STEM! 🔭🧪

Modern cell phones are awesome! Think this version is better? Magic Eraser and Sky adjustment for the win!

Very thankful for many blessings today!

And a beautiful Sun halo this evening to top it off...

Yeah, I'm a little surprised he's not there as well.

Here's the Key Plate and names...

Had our first showing of Season of Light, so it's officially the holiday season!
November 21, 2024 at 3:57 AM
But maybe most surprising, to me at least, is there was someone in attendance who has been LOST to the sands of time...

All of these incredibly famous and successful astronomers, and there's one guy who remains nameless!

Someone who definitely WAS supposed to be there: Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (center picture).

The only woman in this photo, she completely changed our understanding of #stars.

In the Visitor Center photo, she is looking to her left and her face is partly obscured by the person in front of her. 😔

In attendance was Martin Schwarzschild, but he wasn't supposed to be there that day! (Just like Dante Hicks 🤣)

Having only received his PhD in the past few years, he was too junior to be invited to this gathering.

Luckily he was "in the area" and stopped by (a difficult feat in the late 1930s)

One of my favorite pictures of all time, a ton of very famous astronomers in 1 place!

I have (intentionally) cropped the image to make it harder, but does anyone know:
1. Where this is?
2. Anyone in the photo?

And did you know that the Moon is really bright? 🔭

We have to move the 🔭 really far north for our primary target, a really interesting binary #stars. And it's nerve wracking having the telescope that close to something...

After having a former student give current students a tour of the mirror coating lab, we had a pretty good first night of observations! 🔭

Travelled to the observatory and brought along a small telescope for a project on our "get adjusted" night.
Up on the 2.7m tomorrow night...🔭

This was published over a month ago, but just now getting around to putting it on the arxiv...
Really interesting results about a really interesting star!
Plus there's contributions of undergrads and quite a few AAVSO members.

The shelf in my office got an awesome new addition! (Even if they were scraping the bottom of the barrel by selecting me 😂)
It's a pretty good gig getting paid to learn about the universe and tell other people about it...

Hahaha, funny guess, but no. Heard a great talk about the birth of and early universe. 🔭🎢
