Catholic, son, brother, Brother, Jesuit, weightlifter, woodworker, radical for Christ. Proudly putting the SJ into SJW. My tweets≠orgs I am part of. (he/him)
One of my colleagues very kindly turned the base of this cake plate for me as I don't have a lathe (and they terrify me).

Just about time for a final sanding and finishing!

Made from reclaimed walnut and a salvaged glass top.

My group of #Midwest friends from grad school has a text group. Funnily enough, we're all raised #Catholic and study #labor in some way.

We also cheer for different NFC North teams (no Packers fans, because that's a sin).

Always fun to see the secrets that hide below!

I had an extra piece of walnut from the cake plate I'm working on.

I think I'm going to rip a straight edge, split it in half, and glue the straight edges to make it book matched.

Anybody need a new coffee table?

Laying down lines
like Peter and Paul,
I rap real fine
Cause I got the Call.

Wearing my cappa magna
so you're gonna have to cope.
I bring spiritual manna,
I got words of faith and hope.

I spit Godly effects
Cause I'm the pontifex!

Dealing with some shoulder pain, which made me a bit more wobbly than this should have been, but glad to be back benching around 300.

Will be tough keeping this up over Christmas break travel.

Done and delivered! I built this credenza entirely from reclaimed materials. The body is cherry and the doors are walnut. The stained glass is rescued from a home renovation.

It had lots of learning opportunities. Too many, in fact...

It's fun when you tell yourself that you'll go to bed on time and then it's almost 2 AM.

Doing final hardware installation, removal, and applying finish took a little longer than expected, but I finished this project just in time to drive it to DC Thursday after class.

It's hard to describe what a joy it is when a project is square.

An important piece on unionization at Catholic institutions!

Still recovering from being sick by breathing sawdust.

Working on this dining cabinet for a good friend.

Got the carcass all cut out and now I'll work on laying out the dowels and joinery.

Made from solid cherry that was cut down to restore a natural prairie.

In another example of AI ruins everything and is also complete & utter trash:

I was looking for some Norteno or other Mexican-heritage music for our music history discussion.

Instead I found this AI nonsense in which the left gentleman is playing a half-guitar, half-saxophone...

The gift/strength I bring to mutual aid and community work is literally my physical strength. I enjoy being strong; but even more so I find a great sense of meaning in being able to do manual work alongside others.

We all bring gifts to liberation work. What's yours?

Being #Catholic means care for the common good and especially preferential option for the poor. I get vaccinated to protect those who are immunocompromised, can't receive them, or may not have access.

Don't forget to get your flu and COVID shots!

I was nervous about hammering in dowels b/c the body is stained glass. I didn't want impact to cause a crack, bend, etc. So using clamps to get a slow, steady pressure worked perfectly.

I drilled a slightly larger hole in some scrap to give the dowel somewhere to go & avoid tear out. #woodworking

The weather was damp but the spirits were bright at the #NoKings march in downtown St. Louis.

To be Catholic is to care for the poor, the immigrant, and the marginalized. So I dutifully put in my Roman collar and rain coat and headed downtown for democracy.

Today I learned and managed to make some mortise and tenon joints for cabinet doors.

Then managed to waste $100 cutting plexiglass backing to the wrong size...

Decided to apply finish to the coffee table and cutting boards so I wouldn't bang my head on my workbench.

Need a cutting board?

A dado a day keeps the fingers away.

Working on the doors for a credenza I'm building.

Incredible. The @nytimes.com wants to be the newspaper of record in America. But in the middle of a constitutional crisis, the movement of federal troops into American cities, a genocide, & a massive war, their top-of-page headlines are about a former president's son & Harvard kids skipping class.

For your amusement:

A friend from way back in high school found this magazine clipping. The city used to have a magazine for teens with its annual "forty under forty" style of list.

I was in it as "Ken: the Activist."

I might still have that tie, and like many ska kids loved a fedora

I've had a handful of seizures in the last few days (simple partial--I just lose auditory/speaking, nothing worrisome) that are probably related to fatigue, but I made it to the gym.

I'm not going to compete for a bit, so I'm doing lifts I want (Olympic) instead of those I hate (deadlift).

I was exhausted this evening after a really full couple of weeks, especially getting an article done. And I should have gone to bed early.

But I stayed up and sanded this cherry slab that will be a coffee table.

Sprayed it with water to pop the grain overnight, final sand and finish tomorrow!

Students give you a funny look when you're rolling down campus with a cart containing building materials, power tools, and an 8' and 6' foot long cross cut saws...

We were doing some material and environmental history today.

Working on putting together a Black History walking tour of @slu-official.bsky.social for both of my undergrad courses. I'm also creating a guidebook with context, historic photos of the sites, and space for note taking during the tour.
