So happy this work with brilliant friend and colleague is finally published! We challenge the idea that financial competency is beneficial for all racial and ethnic groups. In this paper we look at healthcare disengagement due to cost concerns (eg not filling prescriptions due to cost concerns)
It's official! 🎉📷I am thrilled to announce the publication of my first academic article! In it, my co-author, @kendallriley.bsky.social, & I look at how race disrupts the relationship between financial literacy & health precarity. Check it out on Sociology Compass: t.co/tQednopmoN

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%.

I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters.

I submitted for an R36 dissertation award for aging related research last cycle and knew this would be the likely (and even best case) scenario for any of the NIH DEI related awards but hearing this is their official recommendation? Absolutely devastating.
Just in case you thought that removing DEI criteria would mean that everyone is competing equally: NIH is removing grad students from underrepresented backgrounds from the applicant pool altogether. Their applications will not be considered. Other students, not from these backgrounds, will be.

For The Emancipator, I expanded on an argument I’ve been making on Bluesky. The so-called anti-DEI movement is segregationist, and we should state that plainly.

Eliminating DEI isn't just racist — it's segregationist
New segregationists’ need to use euphemisms shows the weakness of their intellectual position and the Civil Rights Movement’s moral clarity.
