“The purpose of healthcare is to treat the sick. The purpose of public health is to prevent people from getting sick in the first place. The factors shaping the behaviors and decisions that may contribute to ill health are complex.”

Strong public health = societal defense.
We need systems that:
✔️ Treat early
✔️ Track smart
✔️ Care equitably
✔️ Earn trust

Otherwise, we’ll be teaching our crisis in someone else’s history thread.

It seems pretty clear that keeping our heads down and crossing our fingers that the administration doesn’t notice us or the work we’re doing is not going to cut it. Are *any* universities speaking out about this?

I want to see every scientific society going into emergency mode. This is a good example of how an organization can flex its specific power in a time of great need. What else is possible?
The AMS is temporarily opening its career services to all who need them, regardless of membership status, and offering dues waivers and meeting registration fee reductions for those impacted by job loss due to changes in the government.

Today is a great day to refocus and remind myself why I do the work that I do. Fellow US scientists, our work is important and I’m rooting for all of us.

Morning - Rise up & resist! Today, let's focus on what we can control. Remembering that our purpose fuels our resilience & resistance.

They want us to be fearful; worrying about the future. Bc in fear, we're not living in the moment. We're unable to help now when we're spiraling.

I’ve been working on a project using YRBSS data, so I’ve been periodically checking the YRBSS page. To see this statement posted on the CDC website is pretty devastating.

The irony of today being International Day of Women and Girls in Science while the US government is actively trying to prevent us from using the word “women” in our science is just too much. 🙃🙃🙃

“But just remember that they’re not attacking because your work doesn’t matter; they’re attacking *precisely* because it does. So, get some rest, connect with your people, and keep doing it.” Beautifully said.
1/8. This week I had a few different conversations with scholars who, in the face of the attacks on science and institutions of learning in the U.S., are wondering what to do. One suggestion I have is: keep doing your work. It matters in and of itself. Why do I say that? A few reasons.

This is truly a wild time to be an epidemiologist. I worked on a project with the WHO during my MPH program and I fear the potential ramifications of the US leaving.
