There’s an entire festival for Moxie in Lisbon ME every July. The festival is great, the soda less so, but I didn’t grow up with it so who am I to judge?

It’s shocking and depressing that it’s not blindingly obvious that this was intended as a constraint, but then I suppose it needs to get in line. I leave it as an exercise to the reader whether the line is of shocking things or of obvious things or both.

Yes, the foreign-born population of the US is less than 52M. The meaning of “foreigner” here is clear, and it has nothing to do with immigration.

Given the global trends, it was hard to see in the lead up to the election how any democratic candidate for president could win against any republican candidate. It seems that the specific people running only served to make it closer than the global priors would have suggested.

Anything by Sondheim is worthwhile.

One I haven’t seen mentioned yet is “tick, tick… boom!” based on the autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, who wrote Rent. It’s on Netflix. He was a huge Sondheim fan as well, which makes for a great subplot in the film. A modern classic, perhaps?

Great, a GM with no experience in the role and no knowledge of the US market. Sounds like a way to keep the team dependent on “senior consultant” Dave Kasper, which means another year contending for the wooden spoon instead of for the playoffs.

I was irrationally excited the first time they had an S and they made a big fanfare about it. Today I was half a dozen words in before I realized there was something unusual.

Perhaps this is too obvious, but Finest Worksong has got to be up there. The Eponymous version that added horns is an excellent remix too.

I feel slightly embarrassed not including @scalzi.com in the above list since he inspired it. I’ve been reading a lot of his books lately, but they’re all too new to me to know if any will have the same lasting impact.

I loved the Hobbit as a kid, but couldn’t get through Fellowship when I tried it in high school. I read a LOT of challenging books at that age, so that wasn’t the issue. LoTR is indeed a slog. I finally read them in my 20s and agree completely that the movies were more enjoyable.
