I'm an intermediate R user, and I find it helpful when I know *what* I want R to do, but I don't know what the name of the right function is or what library might do it. Google doesn't work super well when you don't have the name itself.

As I have read: "writing is thinking".

That said, I've been experimenting with using AI to clarify my thoughts a bit--when I'm really confused about a concept, I have been finding it helpful to try having a conversation with it.

My grandfather had lived his whole life in southern Ontario before he went to sea! My mom has sent me a few pictures she took of his photos, but I'd like to properly scan them sometime. Here's one with all that ice!

So great to see! My grandfather was a petty officer on K-182 in WW2 and has some amazing photos he took of the bridge covered in ice. Must have been pretty miserable on those winter North Atlantic traverses!

Yeah, as you point out, it's important training! I usually do them where we both read the paper, I give the student some guidelines, and then the student drafts a review. We go over the review together and sometimes do another round of review.

Some journals like J. Exp. Biol. actively encourage us to involve grad students in peer review (with appropriate oversight and declared in the review).

Project management skills is a big one, I think, that is super transferrable to other jobs.
