Non-techie doing Ops in tech 🙋🏽

Fully remote, hanging in 🇵🇹🇪🇸🇸🇬🇳🇱

❤️ Surfing, urbanism, Bali esthetic, futurism, culture, tech (🐍🤖)

❌Paralysis analysis, armchair criticism (often guilty!)
Just finished Outliers

Tldr be born at the right time, right place, ideally rich, work hard and you'll make it - bonus if you're Asian because you'll be good at math

Expected a bit more tbh, for eg on what traits can be learned but maybe there's just no secret

Wanted to learn database stuff over the weekend

Thought I’d start with extending a little Python learning project I already had to organize my e-books

Instead of returning a CSV of books and authors, to put that data into Postgres tables

It worked!

Overkill, but so cool!!

I asked AI for some tips and just ran this code without thinking

In hindsight, I wouldn't have a clue if someone injected something random malicious in AI code

Another vibe coding vulnerability that noobs have to suffer through!

Re-reading from my corporate days - tldr build belonging, share vulnerabilities, set common purpose

Still important but only past a certain stage

We're not Navy SEALs or Pixar!

And can delay building a team as we start off with AI, solo and remotely

Numbeo just published their Quality of Life index

Good reflection of how Baltic states have been doing great, like Estonia, Lithuania

I'm surprised by:
- Many in the top 20 are grey weather countries 🤷🏽‍♂️
- Oman in 4?? Dk almost anything about it
- Singapore 38? Not what X says!

Finished my first book in Portuguese: a short history of China

Compared to the Roman Empire:
- They had approx the same land area in 100 AD
- Tons of languages, local/regional centers, etc

But the Roman Empire split into a million states while modern China is ~2X bigger?! 😱

Over on LinkedIn, health influencers are saying alcohol is good??

Or where are they saying that

Wild!

The Guardian on performative wokeism and how it backfired

Good reflection, hits hard

Finished @cs50.harvard.edu's main course

Damn it goes deep

People talk about vibe-coding but not while actually learning how to code

You can and should do both

10X move

Heard the new DeepSeek was good on benchmarks but hadn't seen much feedback in terms of real-world usage

So tried it for some Business Ops use case

Faster than Gemini Pro but still running into the deal-breaking "server busy" way too much

Can't work for me as a daily driver

I recall Grammarly from the pre-AI days

Simple grammar checker in emails

Or at least I thought they were simple

$700M annual run rate, WTF

And now $1B in financing 🤯😱

My mind is truly blown

One thing that's pretty awesome about Portugal:

- €5-8 for 100GB of 5G mobile data (€10 for unlimited data)

Several providers offer this, and for €20, a phone+1G fiber bundle

Great value IMO

Not religious nor superstitious, but today that the Pope passed away...

Yesterday, saw this white pigeon that refused to move from the road

Got out of the car to chase it onto the pavement

It stayed grounded for 20 mins

I thought it couldn't fly but it did when a big dog came

Learning with AI is truly amazing

Harvard's @cs50 has their Duck AI learning assistant

I've been asking it stuff I would ask a mentor or senior and it's really helped with the bashing-head-against-wall moments

Idk if it impacts knowledge retention or learning outcomes though!

It was a reference to conservative US folks criticizing Zelensky for not wearing suits 🫣

Just read Catch Me If You Can (1980)

Something for the post-truth world we live in, I'm not sure what

Supposed to be an autobiography, but a quick search shows that it's all a lie

The guy didn't reform and conned ppl into a lifelong career

As a Google Workspace user, using Gemini is easy because I'm already deep in the G ecosystem

Existing distribution channels are a huge advantage

While G was sleeping, ChatGPT got to a bajillion users and became a household brand

Now the dragon is awake - exciting times!

A few weeks is a long time in AI - Manus was all the hype as the latest top AI out of China

I only just got access - in the meantime, everything has changed... multiple times

Still going to try it out, but with so many choices, it's going to be hard to stand out

👀

In times of tariffs, Sam Altman's 2017's "American Equity" stands out

- Give every adult citizen an annual share of US GDP

"Owning something like a share in America would align all of us... the better the country does, the better everyone does"

blog.samaltman.com/american-equ...

Why not?!

Coastal Mexico is better than Bali IMO

Less crowds, great vibes

Mexico City is red-pilling me on the importance of air quality

It’s not even red and I'm already feeling it

Skin, sleep, nasal congestion

The general unpleasantness of being outside

Ubers don’t even wind up windows

Why??

Spotted: new tag in X for bot replies?

Anyone knows what's up with this?

Back to the usual suspects!

Lisbon, circled in red, has a ferry across the Tagus river (red arrow)

The Portuguese government wants to build a tunnel under the river

This is on top of a new airport AND a metro extension to the ferry

Lots of ambition, will it actually happen 👀🤔🫣

Starting the week full of gratitude

Helps when I ended the weekend with this beautiful sunset in my Portuguese beach town

Let's go, fam!! 🚀🚀❤️💪
