Finally, I really like Macbeth era Sam. Not from last night but it’s a very good look.

Sam said he remembers Shakespeare lines in a way he couldn’t remember Outlander. Ian said it’s because blank verse is easy to learn and remember and Shakespeare knew the actors would have to learn quickly. He also said they only got their part of the script and that why it’s called a ‘part’!

Director Dan Raggett was supposed to be in Latvia but at the last minute stayed for the panel. They clapped at him often when anything complimentary was said about the play.

Lia said she didn’t like Shakespeare until this play and now she’s fully ‘in it’. She felt initially that Macbeth was too big in scope to encompass and then realised that was the point and you had to hold onto its mane and get pulled along for the ride.

It is Lia Williams birthday today and everyone sang Hapoy Birthday to her. She seems very modest and humble and clearly has a huge talent. Both her and Sam seemed a bit in awe of Judy and Ian with their multiple Oliviers, Tonys, golden globes and Oscar’s.

Most welcome! It was a wonderful evening just a shame I couldn’t do the cocktail meet and greet but at £750 that was way out of budget!

Thanks Cheryl. Unfortunately none of the panel 😕 I hope they issue one because there was a photographer and it was filmed.

Wow looks amazing!

You’re very welcome, I’m so glad I bought a ticket. I forgot to say it was filmed so maybe it will come out sometime.

The Rob Roy! Great seats.

That’s all for now. Will decipher other notes tomorrow for any nuggets.

…but the company are very supportive and they have a ritual of counting to 10 to get them ready to go on. Overall seems like they’ve had an amazing experience together.

Noted 15 years since Sam had been on the stage. Felt he was still learning. Said every performance was different and it felt organic like jazz. Said he and Lia had found it exhausting at times. Cast got them through. Lia said some days she felt she couldn’t hang herself again 🫤 …

The cast all stay on RSC accommodation locally. Talked about memories of the Dirty Duck - Sam likes Stratford but said it would be a very short book when asked if he’d write one
November 25, 2025 at 9:52 PM
No questions from the audience. Audience very appreciative and felt very intimate. Sam and Lia much more shy than Judy and Ian who were playing it like old hands
November 25, 2025 at 9:52 PM
Sam had a Rob Roy cocktail, Judy champagne, Ian orange juice and Lia a fevertree tonic
November 25, 2025 at 9:52 PM
Sam revealed that sometimes they get real chips for the banquet scene but he finds it hard to nab one while seeing Banquo 😋
November 25, 2025 at 9:52 PM
Judy said she’d never imagined Macbeth carrying Lady M after she died and said she absolutely loved the way it was done
November 25, 2025 at 9:52 PM
Sam escorted Judy each time and was a perfect gentleman. Thanked the director and cast who were there.
November 25, 2025 at 9:52 PM
Sam asked about future roles. He sees this as the start of a journey. Would love to do more with the same company.
November 25, 2025 at 9:52 PM
Ian took up 50% of time but was a total pro and did a marvellous Shakespearean speech about treating strangers and migrants kindly. Sam lead the requests for short performances which the other 3 did. Judy sonnet 29 and Lia played Rosalind.
November 25, 2025 at 9:52 PM
Funniest joke of the night was when Sam was asked whether Macbeth was easier to speak in Scottish. He felt it was because they use all parts of the mouth to speak ‘we’re quite muscular’ he said to which Ian McKellen replied knowingly ‘I knoooow’ 😄
