In my WIP (that desperately needs a title 😅), FMC Madison has vibrant purple hair. It's usually the first thing people, including Kendra here, notice about her. And because it's fiction, the color never fades, and she never has to get it touched up. 🤣

She hadn’t expected to run into her boyfriend in the restaurant after happy hour either, and she definitely hadn’t expected him to be on a date with someone when she did. And yet, there was no mistaking Wesley’s broad shoulders, dirty blonde hair, or the velvety sound of his laugh. Even seated at a table several feet away, Kendra knew that laugh well. It was his I’m Trying To Charm You laugh that she had fallen victim to more times that she wanted to admit, but this evening it was directed toward a beautiful, pale, purple-haired girl who didn’t look to be more than 25. What the absolute fuck.

“Virginia, can I…” The experience had left them both feeling intensely vulnerable, and Virginia could tell Elaine was scared that whatever she intended to ask would be poorly received. She nodded encouragingly. Her friend had made her feel so comfortable, and had been so gentle with her; if it was within her power, she wouldn’t refuse her anything she needed right now. “Can I please kiss you?” Virginia was surprised but tried to keep it from showing on her face. For all the unexpectedly intimate thoughts she’d had earlier, she had never really thought about kissing Elaine. But in the moment, it felt like exactly the right thing—the thing they both needed. She leaned forward and pressed her lips to Elaine’s. It was quick, but the butterflies she thought had fled were suddenly back, fluttering in full force.

I pulled my hands apart without a problem. Everyone turned and looked at Clyde. When he tried to separate his hands, he found out real quick that they were stuck together pretty well. He was humiliated, started yelling, saying I’d given him the royal shaft, only because he didn’t care enough to ask what the denatured alcohol would do to the glue. So, I said something like ‘maybe this should be a lesson to be more careful what you do with your hands.’” “So, everyone knew you had done it on purpose,” Virginia concluded, swallowing the last sip of her wine. Elaine shrugged. “Like I said, he stopped touching girls in the hallways, so it seems to me that it was effective.” “You spent three days in detention.” “Yeah, and my dad really flipped his lid when he found out.”

The drive back was mostly quiet, the weight of their conversation covering them like a heavy, warm blanket. Once inside the apartment, Elaine removed her jacket from Virginia’s shoulders; she wasn’t sure if Virginia had actually gotten cold or if she had only pretended, knowing how much she would enjoy seeing her wrapped up in the leather garment. She hoped the next time she wore it, she would still be able to smell Virginia’s perfume around the collar.
