Thelonious Monk cuts through noise. Asked “Where’s jazz going?” he said: “I don’t know. You can’t make anything go anywhere. It just happens.”
When world feels unstable & future unclear it’s easy to lose hope. Monk reminds life, like jazz, can’t be forced. It unfolds. It improvises. It surprises.

One day after the Summer Solstice, and we’ve got snow in the mountains! A good omen for the 25-26 snowboarding season. 🏂
Enjoying summer while I prepare physically and mentally for tree runs and snowy silence.
Winter 25-26 let’s go!

Today we commemorate Juneteenth, when news of emancipation reached enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865.
Today we celebrate freedom, remember the struggles that made it possible, and pledge to continue working to build a more just society for all.

Today I flew the flag upside down as a symbol of distress - a signal that our nation is in dire peril.

Our democracy faces extreme danger under the current administration’s authoritarian overreach.

Patriotism means defending democracy, not bowing to tyranny. 🇺🇸

“Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks. It leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.” - Karis Nemik, Andor

Spent my birthday cycling around Victoria, BC during the International Seaweed Symposium (they were nice enough to pause the symposium for the day). Beautiful day and closed it out with drinks and dinner with friends and colleagues. I’m ready for my next trip around the sun! Thanks everyone! 😎🌱🚴‍♂️🇨🇦🌞

As we head into Spring, I’ve got bull kelp on my mind and looking forward to seeing these fast growing macro algae begin their journey to the surface in the coming weeks and months. #helpthekelp 🦑 #marinelife

I received a package from our friends in Ukraine this week containing this hand embroidered sweatshirt purchased from a local group raising money for the war effort. I look forward to wearing it proudly. When I opened it, I found this sweet surprise and I teared up a little bit. #SlavaUkraine 🥹 🇺🇦💙💛🌻

Just finished reading “On Tyranny” by Timothy Snyder. Highly recommend reading in these times - each day that goes by my recommendation gets stronger (re-read even). #nokingshere

Storm cycle day 4
We all had the luck of the Irish for St Patrick’s Day - bluebird skies and deep dry powder all over - better than a pot of gold, imo. Erin Go Braugh lads and lassies! 🍀❄️🍀❄️🍀❄️😎

Storm cycle day 3 brought so much snow chairs opened late but when they did it was a snowboarder’s paradise with deep powder turns all over the mountain and in the trees.
(Not pictured - me paddling out of a bottomless drift on my snowboard, surf-style) ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️😎

Day 2 of storm cycle.
The only thing to beware this Ides of March was endless fresh pow laps and free refills ‘cuz the snow kept dumping all day. Et tu Brute? Nah, just me and the frisky pony getting some. #snowboard4life
