IMO, for the majority of folks the initial issue was that they couldn't imagine that democracy was at risk. Now though the question is how many of them are willing to stay silent if the think they won't personally be affected.

But you can't really exclude folks like that and still be a democracy.

All you folks in the comments, yeah Rogan might have been slow on the uptake. A lot of people were unfortunately. It's still good that they are seeing things as they are instead of retreating into denial.

I don't know if there is a good option here but staying in these kinds of environments can eventually corrupt you, even if your initial intention is to try fix things behind the scenes.

I remember liking his comics in the 90's and then read one of is non-comic books (I think it was the Dilbert Principle but not really sure) and came to the conclusion that he was a bit off his rocker even then.

maybe an unpopular position on this website but i think the moderate dem focus on ICE training can be, with political pressure, the pathway to more fundamental reforms. rhetorically it is not too hard to move from “more training” to “turns out they’re untrainable and we have to start all over.”

That is a hopeful sign but we'll see. My worry is that most people won't react until we already have hyperinflation.

Also, given the administration's response to the the killing of Renee Good, I suspect his new modus operandi is to not backdown for anything.

The risk that the markets will be complacent short term is real but the bond and currency markets aren't driven by tech and are global. If it seems likely that US inflation is going to spike then US Treasuries become a lot less valuable. It would make sense to drop those for something else.

To be clear to all the people liking this, I actually think it's more likely that the bond market will become complacent instead of Trump backing down. But there is at least the possibility that it won't.

To be fair, Powell knows that when he says thing the financial markets tend to listen, which isn't true for most other people (even influential ones).
January 12, 2026 at 2:14 AM
In this case, I think the bet is that this is actually up for the bond and currency markets to decide.

Though to be fair I'm not confident that it will work. In the medium term the market has been more taco than Trump has. But we'll see.
January 12, 2026 at 1:56 AM
Presumably he's doing this knowing that the market will probably react badly. I'm not sure if Trump is going to taco like a lot of people expect given all that's gone on in the past week though.

It's darkly funny how they always blame "advisors to the president".

By not blaming him directly they are placing a potential out for Trump to change his mind and are practically begging him to take it. Of course he never does.

I don't quite agree as it serves as evidence of what the administration is doing in a similar way as the videos of the murder is evidence of what the ICE agent did.

The fact that they immediately ran with the domestic terrorist story and hasn't let it go is the story as much the murder is.

Stopped using Amazon about a year ago and was honestly surprised by how little it affected me given how much I used to use it.

America's Schrodinger's cat is how many of these assholes DHS can actually hire with all the cash they are getting.

Their position is that they should dominant and we should be meek, and it infuriates them when that doesn't happen.

I suspect one of her "crimes" was that she wasn't cowed or fearful. Yesterday there was a story of a priest who confronted an agent and he brandished his gun and said something like "are you scared now?".

I...uh...don't agree about the dictator part. The most economically egalitarian nations on the earth (such as the nordic ones) are democracies. Both left wing and right wing dictators have a poor track record in actually helping normal people.
