a lot of games at the time had to be written for Adlib cards that had FM chips that... loosely resembled General MIDI instruments, and a few composers absolutely loathed how it sounded lol.

omg same, I thought about putting all my modern PC hardware into my old Gateway 2000 'egg' case but it'd be a lot of effort and probably some machining :P
