because one is for defense and one is not, nuclear nonproliferation is not complicated

you cannot have an accurate sense of public sentiment without it

thanks for the convo

I would like to see more journalists engaging with objective reality as we tackle climate change, instead of trying to score political hit points from readers who don’t understand the nuances

our country can and should be a wealthy, principled exporter with a strong resource economy
November 15, 2024 at 9:46 PM
all this is to say, at a certain point one must wonder if flagrant activism is effective, if the practical outcome serves the interests of Saudi Aramco and Gazprom more than it ever actually reduces global emissions or bolsters human rights
November 15, 2024 at 9:46 PM
are we trying to get credit, or trying to address climate change?

politically it seems like a clear choice for those who care about the environment and human rights
November 15, 2024 at 9:41 PM
exactly, based on KXL (which is now dead) and 2017 oil prices, which were low

different biz case now entirely

re: China, their demand is still objectively growing and will continue to do so, and demand from South & SE Asia is surging
November 15, 2024 at 9:39 PM
the primary obstacle to getting infrastructure built in this country is political opposition from largely poorly informed people

crucially they rarely contextualize emissions realities globally & seek just to discredit & sabotage our own industry

to the great harm of the environmental movement
November 15, 2024 at 8:13 PM
what makes you say the business case isn’t there? that’s not an accurate portrayal of what killed the project

and the majority of Chinese energy consumption is still coal-based. replacing just 5% of that with Cdn LNG would have more impact on global emissions than wiping all of Canada off the map
November 15, 2024 at 8:10 PM
i mean in terms of LGBT rights alone i sure would like to see canadian exports dominate and reduce the billions that flow into Saudi every year
November 15, 2024 at 5:21 PM
well good we agree, using Canadian oil & gas & having high standards here are good things

those are fair criticisms of the past but I’d say not reflective of the culture now

Energy East would be a better example of what internal supply could look like

and exporting to China to offset coal plants
November 15, 2024 at 5:17 PM
being Canadian and operating under our charter of rights and freedoms is “stolen valour?”

do you honestly prefer that we import from Saudi and Nigeria?
November 15, 2024 at 5:02 PM
ok well i’d argue the only differences there flow from differences in geology requiring different extraction methods

on a legal, human rights, and reclamation investment basis alberta is near the top of the list

and SURELY better than saudi and nigeria, places we import enormous amounts from
November 15, 2024 at 4:50 PM
I’m still asking whose standards are higher than Alberta’s, and by what measure?
November 15, 2024 at 4:11 PM
ok and i’m just asking which places have objectively higher standards?
November 15, 2024 at 2:57 AM
what does that have to do with saudi arabia?

or alberta‘a ethical standards being lower than that of other (as yet unnamed places), in your view?
November 15, 2024 at 2:56 AM
but yes it’s clear that many people taking this particular heavily politicized stance don’t ‘think about it at all’ lol
November 14, 2024 at 9:28 PM
the original post clearly makes a claim of objectivity so i think it’s a fair question
November 14, 2024 at 9:05 PM
???

clearly a mischaracterization of NEP lol

wish more people could have good faith discussions engaging in objective reality around this industry instead of treating it like a team sport where the goal is to prove fealty to the cause
November 14, 2024 at 9:04 PM
no i’m suggesting that politically sabotaging efforts to extract and transport resources from within our own country, only to offset that by funding an egregious human rights oppressor (amongst other things), is a farcical self own of the highest order
November 14, 2024 at 8:53 PM
uh huh so no objective criteria

how do you feel about the fact that canada imports over $1.5B of oil from saudi arabia every year
November 14, 2024 at 6:21 PM
so who is
November 9, 2024 at 10:11 PM
i say do it! what a lovely gesture
