Here's a survey-style essay on Religion in New Brunswick to 1900 that I wrote for the UNB Libraries project, Tide and Time: A New Brunswick Bibliography. A pleasure to collaborate with Joanne Smyth on this. nbbib.lib.unb.ca/essays/relig...

Some of my fairly recent images of John W. Doull books in Dartmouth, showing off some of the character that makes it a special place.

The last evening of a writing residency/retreat at the Elizabeth Bishop House in Great Village, NS. So grateful for the opportunity to do some writing in a place of such creativity (Bishop herself, but also so many writers since). Admiration for the EB Society and Village Preservation Society!

What a fun query! If you are simply looking for beautiful, smartly-written history books, one of my recent faves (in a teaching, rather than research, area for me): Camilla Townsend's Fifth Sun: A New History of the Aztecs. Helpful reflections on historical thinking, sources, perspective, story.

Last week, had the pleasure of seeing the 1830s scrapbook of a young Mary Miller Chipman Tremaise at the Nova Scotia Archives. This evening, visited her gravesite at St. John's Anglican Church, Port Williams. Always grateful for these connections.

A slightly different recollection of the same song:

Don't you hear the trumpet sounding?
Glory, Hallelujah!
Don't you hear the trumpet sounding?
Glory in your soul:
Oh, and a judgement day is coming!
And your time is swiftly running,
Are you ready for to go?

This is a hymn that Nova Scotia's Richard Preston sang in the 1820s. Can anyone point me to a source or composer?

Enjoyed a Dad-daughter day at the Beaverbrook Gallery last week, and we saw some epic skies! Details from paintings by Tom Thompson and beadwork by Katherine Boyer.

Was able to see the exhibit "Hidden Blackness: Edward Mitchell Bannister" at @owensartgallery.bsky.social, and loved it. Great to sit with the moody landscapes and delightful characters of this #NB -born 19th C artist.
