I use bsky to connect with friends, family, and personal interests. Not work or strangers.
Over the years I've seen Eve play the love interest, comic side characters, and once an old man. I'm eager to see her for the first time as the dictator.

The GOP is undoing a century of public health progress. Republican voters and non-voters made a catastrophic mistake that will kill a lot of people.

That study produced a lot of useful knowledge. Examples: power failure could trap 20,000 people for weeks in elevators. Most people want and would pay for new buildings that function immediately after earthquakes. And more. But one study, no matter how knowledge-rich, does little to produce change.

"Government is the problem" is the problem. We need a Project 2029 to be prepared to repair all this damage and prevent its recurrence. Assuming democracy survives that long.

I like "Don't be scared, be prepared."

Everyone in the listed ZIP Codes qualifies. But even if you don't get the free money, consider investing anyway. Seismic retrofit greatly increases resale value of homes in earthquake country, far in excess of the cost. Before you list an older wood frame house for sale, retrofit it.

Agree, this is a good list. Longer term, scientists have to remember that authoritarians are always anti-intellectual and they will always come for us, maybe right after they come for minorities of all kinds. We need to stop them before they get this far. In 2026, if we still can, get out the vote.

And more indirectly, historically black colleges and Indian colleges. Education promotes wealth, power, and the ability to resist.

It's not an either-or choice. IPCC Working Group II is all about climate adaptation. In addition to the climate scientists in WG II, penty of experts in engineering, social science, building science, emergency management, geography, and policy are advocating for climate adaptation.

I particularly liked Kendra Jewell's aphorism-worthy "No one cares what you know until they know that you care."

100. I like to see what my colleagues love: their cats, kids, homes. It enriches the relationship. We are socal animals, and work is after all just part of life lived in community.

I resubscribed immediately. On a utilitarian basis, crippling a world-class paper does more harm than the slight good achieved by an ineffective swipe against an untouchable gajillionaire. We owe a duty of care to the WaPo staff. The gesture quickly felt small and mean.

Good morning Lucy! Here's some disappointing news from KTVU on 12/5: "Tina Killinger works as a medical assistant at Kaiser in Rohnert Park. When the quake hit, everyone got an alert on their phone and they moved to the door frames." Everyone got the alert and nobody took the right action.
