Slow cyclist, poor woodworker, inadequate cat-owner according to the cat, and guy with strong opinions on local politics. #yql
Here's your regular reminder that even the "good" billionaires are still billionaires.

I always find that stuff so funny. There are two 8-story towers within a few blocks of my house, and apartments maybe 100 meters from my door, and somehow the world hasn't ended.

It's worth remembering that some things increase standard of living while decreasing consumption. Bikeable and transit focused cities make healthier, happier, more social people, and they also cut emissions drastically.

Do you want more Luigis? Because this is how you get more Luigis.

I can't see any reason why the situation with Harris would be any different here. The right promises easy (and untrue) solutions to problems that people are feeling, while the left defends existing institutions. "Everything is fine" is not a winning strategy when we all know it's not true.

One of my fundamental political beliefs is "more train > less train". Sure, the UCP will do some crappy private partnership to funnel money to their buddies, and we'll probably run a hydrogen train or something equally stupid, but still... more train.

Haha, yeah I guess cats don't place nice when you call for a scene reset.

Seems like you're lucky to still have your drone after the way Copper in Analog was eyeing it.

That last election scared me. Cities can't do much against an insane provincial government.

And apparently still pro-car, which is cool since the car industry is famously anti-capitalist and concerned with the state of the public commons.

Hmm, so are you talking suburbs? Small towns? Or people living in cabins built with natural material sourced from the nearby land? 50 single story modern homes certainly damage more ecosystems than a single skyscraper with the same number of citizens.

And that would depend on those people's lifestyle, and how much water they use, no? I'm not sure how this gets away from people using resources to live.
December 4, 2024 at 12:05 AM
Interesting idea. What does this mean in practice? How do you coexist with water for example? What happens when the number of people coexisting with a given water source overwhelm the natural cycle replenishing it?
December 3, 2024 at 11:57 PM
Yeah, I'm very curious what point he's making. There's a difference between "all resources should be exploited for profit" (the shitty capitalist take) and "humans use resources to live" (basic physics). He seems to be mixing the two.

I don't care if people own a car. I own one myself. I care when they try to block changes like bike lanes or paid parking that can reduce the damage cars do to cities.

Why can presidents just randomly pardon people anyway? Seems bad.

I'm told Twitter suppresses links, because following a link means you're leaving Twitter, which they want to disincentivize.

Dang, that looks fantastic!

It was so disappointing seeing Councilor Schmidt-Rempel's proposal to look into council work hours be shut down with so little consideration. Seems like some people benefit from council being a retirement gig that's only accessible to the independently wealthy.

"Life could be better and safer for everyone but it would involve an insignificant tax increase so we will not consider it ever." is basically the motto of every city in North America.
