The drumstick tree outside my parents’ place gets many visitors (sunbirds, flowerpeckers, babblers, mynas, a tailorbird, bush chats, parakeets, bee eaters and the resident peacock who has a long-running feud with my father), but this is the first time I spotted a Flameback woodpecker.

I got to watch a sage grouse lek recently, and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my time in this country. I’m sure it would have been more dramatic during peak breeding season, but I quite enjoyed observing the less escalated interactions.
