Yeah, the shattered trust between the public and private sector is catastrophic, but the shattered trust between the US and the rest of the international community is cataclysmic. The damage, even if stopped before it's fatal, will be permanent. The US will never be the same, and for the worse.

Well, MedPage Today is a reasonably reliable source, but it's definitely a bit odd that it's filed as an editorial, even if it's an editorial by the editor-in-chief. Might well be a real scoop, but definitely worth waiting for confirmation by other outlets.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, nothing directly about journal retractions that I can see, just things adjacent to that.

Each other, and also THE CLAW!

How is recognizing what the consequences of those elections might be and coming up with plans to minimize the harm that is likely to result from them being pollyana? Yes options are limited, but there ARE things people can do. Throwing up your hands and just hoping it won't happen? THAT'S doomerism.

Local politics absolutely matter, you're right. But so does the federal level, especially when a demagogue has spent the better part of a decade weaponizing the federal apparatus. Ignoring one to focus on the other seems like a losing strategy to me.

Supreme Court precedent and the Supremacy Clause are both very powerful tools in Trump's arsenal, and his allies wrote an entire manifesto outlining how he plans on using them. You seem to believe he won't get around to using them. Based on his past term and his own words, I'm pretty sure he will.
November 19, 2024 at 3:14 AM
I have literally never said that. You are making a whole lot of assumptions about my perspective and intentions, and so far, they appear off the mark. I am NOT advocating for giving up. I am highlighting a very real and tangible threat that we need to be cognizant of and plan to resist.
November 19, 2024 at 3:13 AM
Sure, provided you're willing to stop dismissing my concerns as doomerism. Deal? I want people to be aware of the risks & dangers they face and plan accordingly. You and I clearly disagree on what those risks are. I hope you're right, but I suspect you're not. Regardless, my goal is preparedness.

At least re: abortion, why would it need to go through the Supreme Court post-Dobbs? Precedent has been set by said court. It just takes an act of Congress, and access to safe, legal abortion disappears in blue states too. I agree doomerism isn't helpful, but neither is denial or wishful thinking.
November 19, 2024 at 2:35 AM
Right, but if he passes, say, a federal abortion ban, blue states will be forced to comply. If he passes a federal ban on gender affirming care, blue states will be forced to comply. States do not have a mechanism to stop that. He may run out of time, sure, but we can't count on that.

But that just kind of reinforces your point more than anything. If you manage to keep things affordable on a budget in the... what... EU country with the second highest cost of goods, I think? Then yeah, it's very doable for others.
November 18, 2024 at 7:08 PM
I mean, also, Irish prices are pretty abnormal, courtesy of a super high GDP per capita developing in an incredibly short period of time, relatively speaking. Celtic Tiger and all that. Always a bit of a shock when I enter Ireland from anywhere else in the EU and see prices shoot up 20% or so...
November 18, 2024 at 7:06 PM
Not disagreeing! But saying "the states will stop him" when they will not, in fact, stop him is incorrect and potentially dangerous. The states will buy time, but we actually have to do something with it. Not helpful if people think they're safe in blue states. They're not.
November 18, 2024 at 6:52 PM
Sure. Slowing him down is absolutely worthwhile. But that's still not stopping him, and that is a very important distinction to make.
November 18, 2024 at 6:21 PM
I very much regret to inform you that the Supremacy Clause exists. State laws will not, in fact, stop him. At most, they will slow him down.

I'm feeling that, Jess. Especially the pandemic part. Thinking of you and wishing you well from the other side of the continent.
November 14, 2024 at 4:58 PM
I think it came up on Facebook when you mentioned you were moving to Virginia a while back, but, well, life has been busy. Speaking of, how's this side of the country treating you?

Oh, hey, Michael! Fancy seeing you here, on yet another social media platform that isn't the Other Place. Anyway, thanks for mentioning it. I hadn't taken a look at the preview yet, but now I will.
