I stuck with pursue the things that bother me the most I can afford to change. It worked for me... it's also a hot mess.

I fought pursuing surgery to the point it was part of delaying transition 30+ years.
That changed when I was ready to do one myself at home (orchi).
And things promptly went to shit considering more than that (phallus preserving vaginoplasty). (cont)

I went 9mm because I can afford to practice at the range. I'd consider something else *IF* there was a need to handle large animals in my area.

500 S&W just costs the most per bullet. They all have zero stopping power if you can't hit what you're aiming at. They're all limited utility if your wrist flops too much to let the gun load the next round.

Oh... you're looking at stopping power instead of cost to remain proficient at the range and training to stop limp wristing something with heavier recoil... Which goes back to "Rent and try at the range." 9mm is $0.20, .40 S&W $0.29, .357 MAG $0.36, 500 S&W $1.33...
