Just a sensible liberal trying to figure out how we got here. I teach law, which makes it even harder to understand contemporary America these days.
Rest in dreamful peace, Robert Redford.

There will never be another like you.

Dear God in heaven, some random guy took my last post as an invitation to lecture me about Pharisees.

I'd laugh, but . . .

And this is my failing university's homepage today.

Never work at a place that's going to be a case study in failed leadership.

Spending today painting watercolors, petting cats, and being very gentle with myself, for I work for an institution that does this.

The WARN Act requires a minimum of 60 days notice, with pay and benefits (and yes, it applies to universities), and they're trying to dump us on the side of the road.

Sometimes, there's so much work to do that all you can really do is watch cats sleep.

And that's okay.

I'm with my 92-year-old Dad this weekend. He didn't quite feel up to going to church, but the service is on YouTube.

No palms in the yard for Palm Sunday, but some huge magnolias were willing to help out.

#HandsOff in little ol' Shelby brought out 200 or so folks.

That's huge in my ruby-red county!

No disorder, no violence, and the three confused counter-protestors left after about a half hour when they couldn't get a rise out of anybody.

Stay safe, stay informed, and remember "peaceful" doesn't necessarily mean "polite."

Sigh. I hate Republican math.

Nope, it's not "just a cold" when you break this out.

VapoRub is a North Carolina discovery. Originally called "Richardson's Magic Croup and Pneumonia Cure Salve," the original tag line was "Rub it on, sniff it in, it’s good for you, it’s made by Presbyterians.”

You have to admit; that's catchy.

Clearly, I am meant to paint pastry instead of metal.
March 15, 2025 at 2:18 PM
Well, that's just . . . Nice.

If you don't try, you'll never get better.

But wow - painting metal with watercolors is hard.

Yesterday was a shambles. But my stance did not change.

Never forget.

So which part of DEI do you object to?

Second day of the end of semester ten-day push. Wayyyyy too much going on, both inside and outside the office, so I could use some reminding of Good Things.

Send me heart-warming holiday memories, books, movies, and suchlike, would you?

Okay - let's see how this thing works.

I ditched Twitter within a week of Musk taking it over and never looked back.

But this gives me hope - especially the quick response to the citizens of South Korea's response to yesterday's crazed events.
