“Sorry there’s only one bed,” August apologized, sitting on the other side to tug off his boots. “But you kind of sleep like the dead anyway, so I don’t think you’ll need much space.” Bel didn’t answer. He didn’t like the idea of sharing a bed with August, but it was a necessity. Well, at least it was if he didn’t want to sleep on the ground. And he didn’t. August undid his ponytail, letting his countless braids spill down over his shoulders. Bel resisted the urge to ask why he kept it in braids. He had curly hair too; he knew how much of a hassle it could be. He imagined August’s was even more intensely curly than his own, but… He just wondered what it looked like. “Is this a one-man conversation again?” August asked, looking over his shoulder at Bel with an unimpressed stare. Bel drew back, holding his sketchbook against his chest. What was he supposed to say? He struggled for anything that would appease August’s request for communication, but all he could think about was how easy talking seemed to be for August. Playing with his own fingers, Bel looked down at his lap and murmured, “I didn’t know you could be so nice.” It was the wrong thing to say. August’s smile fell instantly, and that mean darkness in his eyes returned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
