Believe it or not, I’ve heard this sort of opinion even from students who use AI.The pressure many feel to use it is so high. I hate it. When I teach my first iteration of my Critical Perspectives on AI & Digital Tech course next fall, we’ll have at least a week on imagining alternative futures.

I’m bitter about the em dash being implicated so I have found alternatives that read like an em dash but aren’t. A hyphen with spaces on either side reads like one but isn’t one.

Indeed. I imagine a couple of people made that choice. Most went to individual or groups of teens who yelled “POTATOES “! The mandarins were taken with less comedy. 🙂

It's actually a social media trend. Kids being silly.

Just silliness. When we trick-or-treated in the 70s, we had to dodge roving gangs of teens stealing our bags. These kids were silly and happy for something a bit different. :)

That may have been true for one or two, but most of the kids were teens on social media and there was a trend around potatoes. They were quite gleeful and even posed for pictures with their potatoes. And some kids are tired of candy (or have food allergies) so they chose an orange.

The SNAP thing is awful, but I'd say mostly it's a social media phenomenon/humor thing with the potatoes. The same kids who say "67" screamed "POTATOES" when they were on offer. Many of the parents were puzzled. :) And the oranges were just kids going "ooh! oranges!"
