The Butterfield Overland carried mail between Saint Louis / Memphis and San Francisco, but with the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 federal mail operations shifted north to avoid Indian Territory. www.okhistory.org/publications...

The CCC properties at the park defined the style now known as National Park Rustic and the brown paint became known as “NPS Brown.”

In the 1930s-1940s the park landscape was redesigned with federal New Deal “make-work” programs, specifically the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)

Sulphur Springs, a 19th century Chickasaw town centered on Pavilion Springs, was relocated to protect the water sources and the property became “Platt National Park” (1906-1976).

The US Department of the Interior acquired “Sulphur Springs Reservation” in 1902 from the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations to protect the natural sulfur and bromide mineral springs and spring fed creeks that were purported to have curative powers.

*is confusing* It is unrealistic to think anyone could ensure a business stays open indefinitely, as they seemed to suggest. Preservation is about communicating what communities deem important from our past into our present-even as those same communities change & grow.

… but we (OK) are definitely making progress. The author’s complaint (?) that preservation laws preserve the physical characteristics of a property rather than the ephemeral I’d confusing and frustrating.

I appreciate you sharing these comments and I agree. In OK we have plenty of room for improvement when it comes to nominating sites to the National Register that reflect the various communities and people in our state…

This has been my trick too. I like to borrow audiobooks from the library (Libby) in addition to a physical or digital copy. I read when I can and then listen when I’m driving or doing monotonous tasks (dishes, laundry, etc)
