I'm reading "Spain in Our Hearts" by historian Adam Hochschild to prepare a lesson on the Spanish Civil War, and all of a sudden it strikes me...

While many of us learn history to not repeat it, others use it as a playbook to seize power.

It's not a new epiphany. It just strikes hard sometimes.

Teachers are key in empowering students to see beyond essentialist narratives. 🍏
When teachers expose history as a human construction laden with perspective and purpose, students learn not to see texts as infallible and undisputable. They can be critical of what they read and more cognizant of ambiguity (Shemilt, 2000; Wertsch, 2008).

Imagination needed...
The United States is the only regime that has formally declared the pursuit of happiness as a fundamental right, yet, it's very structure fails to secure a pathway to it. We cannot cling to what does not work. Changes are afoot. In this time of great instability, we have to be stable for each other, with sober minds reaching and grasping for ways to lift each other up. Imagination is needed to create the regime in which the pursuit of happiness is accessible for all. We have to be good to each other and learn to be good to the world that we share.
