RealID only requires legal residence, not citizenship. In states that offer RealID, permanent residents and others can get one (other states, like WA, only offers the Enhanced ID that does require citizenship)

No, you just have to be a legal resident. Enhanced ID requires citizenship (and some states, like Washington, only offers enhanced ID, so in WA non-citizens can only get a standard license)

War was never declared in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq or Afghanistan. Do you not consider those wars? Declaring war is essentially obsolete for the US, but that doesn't change reality.

Not possible to filibuster rules overturned using the Congressional Review Act.
March 27, 2025 at 11:22 PM
Zero Dems voted with them. It was done under the Congressional Review Act and cannot be filibustered. 52 out of 53 Republican Senators voted for it, it only takes a simple majority.

Because it was done under the Congressional Review Act and cannot be filibustered.

And this applies to any immigrant. You can lose your green card for doing what RFK Jr did. Using marijuana in a state where it is legal can get you deported or denied (since it's still illegal under federal law).

He's literally doing what he promised he would do. Why would Democrats reminding people of this hurt him? I'm upset by it, but I didn't vote for him. No one who voted for him will care.

That assumes his voters didn't want this, but they did.

Being detained without a bond hearing just on the basis of a _charge_ is not currently the law, its a big change.
January 7, 2025 at 9:18 PM
They don't even have to be convicted, just charged. So they don't even have to actually commit a crime, just get the police to charge them and they can be detained without any bond hearing (a right previously enjoyed by all).
January 7, 2025 at 9:18 PM
Except this bill changes it to immigrants _charged_ with a crime. They don't have to be found guilty. It applies mandatory immigration detention solely on the basis of an arrest or charge, removing the right to individual bond hearings. It's a dramatic change that will be exploited by Trump.

I had no idea these existed and just searched them... so tempting. But of course the eternal question is whether my cat will use it or just keep sleeping on the floor.

(I've also met a lot of people who somehow think marrying a US citizen makes you a citizen automatically, I think because movies and TV depict it working almost like that, when in reality it's a long process and can be denied).
November 18, 2024 at 7:10 PM
Not auromatically, and many parents didn't realize this. Especially under the old law, it was more like when you get married, you don't get automatic residency/citizenship but have to apply and follow the process (and it's not 100% guaranteed to be granted).

This is why Trump wants the Senate to let him put everyone in through recess appointments. It might be possible to find a few GOP Senators to reject Gaetz, but it won't matter if they recess. Thune is in favor of this plan: thehill.com/homenews/498...

Absolutely loved all of your Pern work, this cover got me into the series more than anything else and I became obsessed with both the story and the art.

Yeah, I started on Usenet which was largely unmoderated (moderated groups existed but were a minority). It was not great, especially as the userbase expanded.

Don't want to hang out with expats, but didn't learn the language, and surprised they are isolated. Hard to imagine being this un-self-aware.

“I honestly don’t think we could have put in any more effort to acclimatize to the French way of life" followed later by " I haven’t really found time to hunker down and start (learning French)" --- I mean, I can think of at least one thing you could have done.
