The way that Zahra stands her ground in terms of her devotion to her son's life. Reiterating that this could have been avoided and not brought more death in the ceremony. The officials also wanted her to be quiet, and at the funeral, she still openly mourned the loss of her son.

This text does great at what I love to see from political texts which is making the reader uncomfortable. Meaning as a reader we our selves not only couldn’t imagine being in this position or putting another in this position.

This play is wild. Why do the like eating shoe polish? Why is Padric so unhinged? Every time I think I’m understanding what’s happening something else wild happens.

It didn’t make sense to me that Donny insisted Davey confess to accidentally hitting the cat, if he was just going to tell Padric something completely different. How does this knowledge benefit Donny?

The green shirt guy’s personality is insane. Even dying he stayed true to his dark humor. Crazy to think he also murdered his mother, a story line I didn’t see coming.

I think Warsan Shire is a new favorite poet of mine, they way she writes is absolutely beautiful.

"War colors your voice, warms it even. No inclination as to whether you were the killer or the mourner. No one asks. Perhaps you were both."

"No, I can't go with you. Think of me as an animal, a convenience store animal. I can't betray my instinct."

This statement is powerful because it comes from our main character, someone who often listens to what others say without much thought.

Our main character is surprisingly aware of her role within the convenience store. In the text, she refers to herself as a cog in the machine. I found this interesting because she often is unsure of why she has to do things or what the point of certain luxuries is.

I figured there would be a natural riff in there relationship but what I never expects was for Nadia to start leaning towards women. The story while heartbreaking was very full circle and I loved that.

This is my first genuinely in-depth magical realism read, and Mohsin Hamid's use of it in the story is powerful and engaging. The relationship between the two main protagonists is also beautiful in its own way: the way the two work as opposites, yet together in such a brutal reality.

I find the way the story is being slowly fed to us vetting engaging and almost jarring. I think it’s very telling of how crisis become normalized for these place because how often or how long they are.

I think these stories show the importance of language in different cultures. The isolation of these is the isolation of an entire group of people.

“Only men can be worshipers.”
This line stood out to me, how consistently sexism plays a role throughout cultures.

I’ve seen a very strong presence of water physically and through imagery. I find it interesting how it’s played a role in so many of the stories.

“Still, I watch the sea. At night, the sky and the sea are one. The stars look so huge and so close. They make for very bright reflections in the sea. At times I feel like I can just reach out and pull a star down from the sky…”(Kindle Unlimited Edition page 8)

I think that having the reader see the world as tourist is a unique way to write a novel prospective.

It’s interesting seeing Tambu experiencing what we call “code switching” when visiting home. Not only does the demeanor but so does her way of speaking to her parents compared to her cousin. #bsuwlit

I think the way she highlights how different the customs are is important to under this cultural shift. I also find it interesting that they don’t really explain how anything works.

In act one I wasn’t prepared for the tea, but in all seriousness.I found it wild that Elesin can just say ‘I want that one’ and marry a woman. Especially one who is already married.
