As for as typesetting the footnotes, consider including the first 7 characters of the hash in the page footnote, and have a comprehensive hash appendix at the end of the book. This allows use of SHA-1/256 etc, keeps the page readable, and provides a way to automate hash lookups en-masse.

I don't think you are missing anything.
Using hashes in books makes sure the source documents are not doctored post-publication. Your copy of source documents would be needed to prove authenticity (like you shared on archive_org).
