Please keep your pleas & requests to politicians and officials polite but firm, mention if this issue might change your vote & never be abusive to staff! I love & revere the Vic #StateLibrary, & collection & library staff; I've had a fellowship there & added my original cartoons to its collection.

We're at crisis point @jacintaallen. You have ministers for racing & casinos in the inner cabinet & outside, the Minister for 'Creative Industries', Colin Brooks. We need you to step up now. The #StateLibrary, an internationally known cultural jewel, is being crunched in the jaws of incompetence.

As the very good human Mr John Clarke once said, '... footpaths are running at a loss' or, as useless,
clueless, unredeemable AI would have it:

Cheery moment before beddies: here is a picture of trained-bird-act maven Madame Marzella in bejewelled pantalons and sparkly stage tights, costume jewels, feathered giant hat, cape, embroidered stomacher and, well, parrots. Macaws, possibly? Her husband did the lighting. c1890. Night, night.

The 1st thing I want to hear from the new Liberal leader in Victoria is a core promise to boost country & suburban funding for maternity services & guarantee ongoing access to contraception & terminations for girls & women, despite the infiltration of Christian extremist-activists in her ranks.

Be careful out there. AI-using bastards are scamming #authors, pretending to be #publishers. And hey, @australia.theguardian.com great story but please retire the term 'vanity publishing'. Independent & self-publishing or can be totally legit & doesn't deserve a sneery-snobby nickname.

Lucky duck me, getting to visit a litter of puppers at Guide Dogs Victoria last week, and hear about the organisation's new facilities, & myriad services for people of all ages who are blind or have low vision, or need therapy dogs. Thanks to Liz & Erin for inviting us! More on my Insta account.

Hard disagree: the Australian Air Force doing blue camo is a funny idea ('I can't see them against the sky!') & is welcoming to visible stains.

I'm certainly haunted by this photo of GR in the background wearing an explosive, era-unknown fluffy shrug & double-row giant-pearl bracelet, looming up beside Trump & looking like she's just given him a wee package & is gesturing hypnotically at it. (Alt shows extra caption and her face.)

I'm all in favour of Halloween fun but this photo of a child's 'haul' being sorted really shocked me. Is this normal over there? Do American kids go trick-or-treating with luggage? How would you even carry or eat this phenomenal amount of lollies?

Dr Vinay Rane in The Age on the tragic crises, injuries & deaths repeatedly caused by people who oppose prenatal tests & vaccinations, & insist on 'freebirths' & home-births in any circumstances. Women are lied to about risks, giving birth in danger too far from specialist care if things go wrong.

An exceedingly stupid Getty agency AI image in today's Guardian with a false caption claiming that it's of a surgeon using a lead pencil to draw random black ink arrows on a young woman with a tight jaw and no expression, in full make-up, allegedly immediately before 'face-lift' surgery.

It certainly was. I describe Madam Marzella's whole trained bird act ("feathered mummers') from c1900 reviews, in my book, Ada.

Channel 9's The Age is running an absolutely ludicrously irrelevant UK aristo story on a family nobody here has ever heard of nor cares about, because it has a deal to syndicate stories from the madly right-wing UK Telegraph. Mortifying.

Off to startle Nunawading tonight with a 99% sold-out show on menopause with Judith Lucy, Denise Scott, Yvonne McAuley producer for Token, videographer Gail Davidson & Kristin Gill, Co-founder of Northern Books on the trestle for book-signing. 'You go, girls'? We shall go like the very clappers.

Ba ha ha ha. The auction catalogue delivers another doozy.

Ahem. Say hiii to the brand-new, updated 2026 edition of Girl Stuff for the 8-12s: first periods; body changes, friends & bullies, confidence, mental health, heroines, healthy eating, & so much more. Equip them to be themselves in the face of hard sell ads & social pressures. #ChristmasIsComing

Wouldn't be the first reptile to be heard lying at the Sheraton Mirage in Port Douglas. Glad they've got evidence this time.

These chairs in the Leonard Joel auction catalogue this week look like they were drawn by Saul Steinberg, or Jean-Jaques Sempé, or Louis Bemelmans, who did the Madeleine books ... #cartoon #chairs

I told my dermatologist that women are buying expensive collagen pills, powders and 'gummies' because they think it will put more collagen into their skin. (Because lies.) This is the face she made before a short lecture about digestive juices & how amino acids behave and what and good lord.

You stand accused of being an impertinent co-presenter & using knowledge and bewitching affrontery, @profaliceroberts.bsky.social. Burn her!

Here's comedian/dancer Fanny Dango who married an older, rich Australian sheep farmer whose will stipulated she'd get no more money if she remarried. So she didn't, and travelled the world with her own silk sheets & two small, bitey dogs. He died 1923; she died 1972. #OnYaFanny
