I’m a liberal Texan Jewish woman engineer working in aerospace while trying to flip this giant state blue. Married to my favorite guy. Mom to two awesome young women (who now live in blue states where they have bodily autonomy)

Ezra Klein lost me a while back.

Yes, of course. But I’m talking about a party platform here, not the legislative process.

That’s correct. They chose not to spend money on a siren system for the river.

I know your heart breaks for these babies. Mine too. FEMA could not have saved these kids. These campers needed Kerr County and Camp Mystic to make better choices. Long before the flood, after the NWS sent alerts and during the night of the flood - those decisions are why those kids died. Not FEMA.

No one anticipated a 30’ wave of water on the Guadalupe. No.

I really want Dems to start talking about immigration reform - not in a reactionary way to “the border crisis” but from a position of “what kind of immigration system do we want in the 21st century.” There is a lot of data out there about what Americans actually want on this topic!
July 12, 2025 at 2:59 PM
Yes, this is true. But it wouldn’t have saved the kids at Mystic.

Sorry it isnt working for you. It’s an article in The Kerrville Daily Times from Jan 9 2023 titled “Officials contract with Motorola for countywide emergency communications system”
Officials contract with Motorola for countywide emergency communications system
The Kerr County Commissioners Court on Tuesday approved a $7.5 million contract with Motorola for the provision of a countywide emergency communication system.

So FEMA had nothing to do with the flood watch or flood warning alerts that went out. And FEMA could not and would not deploy to a location like Camp Mystic because of a flood watch sent out by NWS. That’s not how anyone operated. FEMA is meant to support emergency recovery efforts.
July 12, 2025 at 2:46 PM
I think you mean NWS sent warnings about possible flood risk. I don’t think FEMA sends warnings.

Exclusive: Kerr County, where nearly 100 people were killed and more than 160 remain missing, had the technology to turn every cellphone in the area into a blaring alarm, but officials did not do so before or during the river level rising to record heights.
Kerr County did not use its most far-reaching alert system in deadly Texas floods
Local officials used the system more than two days after the recorded height of the floods.

They had access to a free system (IPAWS) which could make cell phones blare an alarm but they chose not to use it for this flood. (Link to WAPO article coming)

Yes, i agree. Though it seems they did the upgrades and chose not to use some if the tools forbthis flood. Wish they would have spent some of that money on sirens. dailytimes.com/news/officia...

FEMA could not have saved those campers. They were in the river long before anyone tried to call FEMA.
