Inhaled @gautambhatia88.bsky.social 's THE SENTENCE over the course of one night and one flight. SF, Anarchist politics AND Law???? Incredible combination and also super well written! (Currently only on the Amazon India store but with some very ez h4x after buying, can be ported over to the Kobo!)

Book of the year: BABEL.

This book just made me angrier and angrier. You can actually feel Rebecca’s anger seep through the pages and the writing.

11/10 masterpiece.

CHAIN-GANG ALL STARS - What if the US prison system became a for-profit gladiator reality TV show?
On every chapter I read I kept thinking to myself: “this can’t get worse or more brutal, can it?” and it did. All the way til the end. Incredible writing.

Continuing in the theme of war, sadness, and general dark humour, SEVEN MOONS OF MAALI ALMEIDA sees a half-Tamil half-Sinhala, all gay and dead journalist has 7 days to find out who killed him before his soul is wiped out in the height of the Sri Lankan civil war. VV funny, vv sad.

THE SYMPATHIZER - The end of the Vietnam War, and US immigration through the eyes of a North Vietnamese spy.
At the risk of cliche, I really think it’s like Catch-22 of the Vietnam War.
Horrified me, made me angry, made me sad, and I was laughing the whole time.

I have much to say about NEUROMANCER - so much of the 80s just pours through with all the sleaze and the White Man in the Orient vibes the whole time. It's difficult to read again in the current era.

It's still very much a book FOR this era too. I just wish it was better.

INTERPRETER OF MALADIES -
I can’t believe I slept on this book and Jhumpa Lahiri for so long.

Just lovely writing, and so wonderful in its simplicity and slice of life. I just felt refreshed reading all of the stories. She really has a gift.

DEAR SENTHURAN was a visceral book - I’ve never read a memoir like this. I received a lot of wisdom, but I also realised I would not like Akwaeke if we met IRL. It was a different version of FRESHWATER which I didn't like so much.

And fittingly enough, I ended the year with the last book of the Stormlight Archive era 1 - WIND AND TRUTH, which was probably as long as all three of the books above combined.

The word epic gets thrown around a lot in fantasy, but nobody does epic fantasy quite like Sanderson.

There was a LOT of Brando Sando this year - with the first three books of the year being a re-read of the Mistborn series because 1. it had been a WHILE and 2. I wanted to start strong.

The plot coming together in book 3 is just so satisfying.

Okayyy let's do this - I sent a bunch of instagram stories so this should be an ez copy-paste job..

I read close to my usual target of 2 books per month. Not too much variation - something I want to change for next year.

Honestly this has stopped about 80% of crap on the discover feed. Especially to stop US politics (I am not from the USA). But some stuff still leaks through because people post screenshots/pics

Actually, @pambots.bsky.social makes a pretty decent point. I just ran through the images I alt-texted recently and it's....... pretty good actually? A cursory review of the generated text would handle most of the mislabeling. (also alt-texted by ChatGPT lol)

The @subvert.fm zine is here all the way to Singapore! It's always good to hold something physical - especially when it's something new and exciting for the future.

Our boy TM Krishna dropping some spicy takes on the linkage (or lack of) between Hindustani and Karnatik classical. And also the whole presumed notion of "purity" (ie non Muslim, and later on only upper caste music making) Karnatik music. I wonder how the kutcheri community is doing with this 🥵🔥
