His cancer did not become obvious until it was too late. People will go without critical screenings. At a minimum we need to roll down the Medicare eligible age. At a barest minimum.

My FIL died in large part bc he could not afford health insurance before there were subsidies. Rolled the dice at 63 and went without. Waited until Medicare eligible. By that time he had stage 4 colon cancer. We lost him 9 months later. It was devastating. I understand this painfully.

It seems like it should be higher than that based on what I was paying in Seattle 20 years ago. For a fancy daycare it was like $1600 back then. I went with an in home which was closer to $1k. When 2nd child was born I stayed home for a while. We were lucky one salary was enough. Not true for many.
