Unfortunately, my sister Lacey still has two more years of school. Her debt hasn’t been paid off yet. We have until she’s eighteen to get it squared away, or she’ll be forced to go into recruitment. It’s basically the meat grinder for the military. Usually you’re sent to die on the front lines with minimal training and a crappy kit. Other times, you might be tasked as experimental fodder. They’ll do stuff like wrap your legs in wet rags until they fall off, have some scientists write some notes on trench foot, then go ahead and call it even—even though the government makes school mandatory and sets the fees. Needless to say, I’m not scavenging for some light fun. I love Lacey. The thing I love most about her is that she’s alive.

#WIPSnips - Excerpt from Sinner Academy (Dystopian Fiction in a college setting, Hunger Games x Fourth Wing)

I didn't have "explode" so I hope a guy getting shot in the head for not eating mystery powder when ordered to by a glorified cop is a close enough ✨vibe✨(I wrote it tonight) #indieauthor
We’re interrupted as the entire crowd seems to collectively turn their attention to a conduct auditor walking around the lunch room. He stops at a guy in a blue button up shirt and, what I assume, is natural red hair. The conduct auditor pulls up his helmet so he can stare down the red-head. The auditor pulls out a small vial with a white powder inside. The cork is small and doesn’t make a sound as it’s pulled out of the bottle, the white stuff sprinkled over his plate. “Continue your meal,” he orders. The red-head looks up. “What the f—” His words are cut short by a gunshot, as the rest of the table gets lightly splattered with his blood. In the final years of school I’d learned that Eden had put a lot of research into accuracy weapons, but it was never mentioned that they’d be used to not risk casualties in lunch rooms at crime college. The conduct auditor’s footsteps are now the only sound in the room as people are trying to avoid eye contact. His head is scanning side to side for his next victim. He stops at a chubby blonde girl with a baby face and white blonde hair that’s been styled in an intricate braid. She looks angelic in her yellow tulle dress. The food in front of her is sprinkled with the same white powder. “Eat it,” he demands. The girl’s blue eyes seem to well with tears. She doesn’t say anything back. I can’t do anything but watch on as he slowly raises his gun to her head. “Or are you questioning the love The Headship has for you?”

#WIPSnips is from Academy For Sinners - A New Adult, dystopian survival novel set in a university where each student is a criminal of the state. Only 70 of the 278 first years will make it to the second. There WERE 280, but being frozen isn't for everyone (think Hunger Games x Fourth Wing)
The console switches on and text appears on the screen. “Welcome, First Year Eurydice Slater. Please design your room. Tell me what you like and I can provide some decor options. Alternatively, choose from the catalogue (1 of 125,000 items).” In the south of Eden, we didn’t really use technology that much. It was expensive and seen as a wasteful luxury. We got to use consoles at school though. They’re used in war, so of course we had to be able to use them. I can move a mouse, and my typing is pretty good. I opt to tell the console what I want. … What do I want?

#WIPSnips - Academy For Sinners. Once you're 18 in Eden, the government can kill you if you break the law. Unless you're smart.

Houses at Sinner Academy are chosen based on your crime. Except for Pride. You're put there if you think so highly of yourself that you could outrun The Headship.
The doors swing open and a parade of seven banners make their way through the room and position themselves around the hall. They weren’t what I expected at all. I thought wrath might be a dragon or something, sloth… well… a sloth, envy? Maybe a snake? Instead, it’s kind of random. Wrath is a red banner with a lamb, Greed is green with some kind of dog-rodent thing on its hind legs, Lust is pink with a wolf—of all things, Envy is yellow with a bat, Gluttony is orange with a spider on it, and sloth is a purple banner with an octopus on it. There are a few other sea creatures on Sloth’s banner, but I don’t recognise them. The Pride banner is the same shocking hue of blue as my hair, if not a little paler. Right under the fancy embroidery showing the name “Pride” is… a turtle? I don’t really understand what a turtle has to do with pride. The student holding the banner is looking over us like we’re rotten garbage left out in the sun, so I don’t think he’s the best person to ask. “Why do you think our animal is a turtle?” Faith whispers to me out of the corner of her mouth. The second year holding the banner darts his eyes over to us. I think he heard us, but he doesn’t directly address us. Instead, in a bored—yet very loud—tone, he announces, “The emblem of Pride is a turtle. All emblems are motivation for what we should strive for in our rehabilitation as soldiers of the state. Turtles have been known to represent humility…” He scanned the group of us, making sure we were all paying attention. “And they don’t run.”

We don’t have time to confer with each other. On instinct, we both run. It’s our only hope, and I know that we’re going to have to leave Eden. I want to leave Eden. I have the gut feeling that Cameron wants to leave Eden with me, too. And we’re going to be successful. The corner is coming up fast and the patrol is still far behind us. That’s when I get confirmation of my gut feeling. Cameron grabs me by the shoulders and kisses me deeply, and the dirt of the day seems to melt away from my body. The patrol fades to nothing. Something brushes past my hair. His hand? I open my eyes and look a little past him to see the other patrol blocking our exit point. The next something doesn’t brush past me. Searing pain shoots through my leg as I drop to the ground, and I realise I’ve been hit with an incapacitation dart. I’m eye to eye with Cameron who’s also been hit. He’s never looked scared before.

“It’s ‘coz you’re pov, isn’t it?” She had let go of my arm, but only to nudge it slightly harder. “I bet you got some crap job, you’re on leave because of your dead parents, and now you have no money. No, wait, maybe you’re on Centrelink!” God, her laugh was the worst thing I’d ever heard. It was so tempting to set her straight, but I couldn’t give her an inch. Anything I’d say, I’d let her win. If I agreed with her, she’d probably stand around being a bitch about how she thinks I’m on Centrelink. Telling her that I was actually doing well financially would probably end in getting berated for being a tight arse. Acknowledging her bait about my parents would just… well, that’s an immediate game over for me. Instead, I just asked, “Is this what dudes in this town find attractive? Begging for a drink on a weekday?” She pushed me with both hands on each syllable, “IT’S. MY. BIRTH. DAY!” I’d just assumed, up to this point, she’d been wearing a tiara because she was awful. She looked like she was about to cry. Fuck. I barely knew how to talk to women, let alone disarm a drunk and crying one.

Without the song, my head began to clear again. What the hell was I doing? It was fucking cold and there was exactly one piece of fabric between my dick and the rest of the world. Holy shit. When I’d gotten back to the sand, I tumbled backwards with whoever was holding me. I looked down to my arms and in the paleness of the moonlight, I could see lashings of blisters up my arms where the hands had been. The bumps were oozing blood. Deep purple and red bruises, almost like burn scars, were creeping like tendrils over my forearms. Slowly, a deep burning set in. The sand felt like glass as it rubbed the open wounds, more caustic than whatever caused the sanguine bubbles on my skin. Within the silence, I could focus on the pain. It went straight to my head. There was no time to see who my saviour had been. The only thing I remembered to do was roll my head to my shoulder so I didn’t bang it too hard as I collapsed from my sitting position. The world went dark.

On top of all of that, because I have eyes, I’d noticed she was Asian but her dad was white. Where was her mum in all of this? Is that something I should ask? Am I allowed to notice that kind of thing? I probably shouldn’t bring that up, because I remember watching a Hari Kondabolu special where asking “Where are you from” really just means “Why aren’t you white?” and I didn’t want to be a douche, or racist… or a racist douche. Plus she doesn’t have an accent or anything, so she’s probably just from like… Sydney. Maybe Melbourne, going just by her hair. Before I could stop myself, I blurted out, “So how come your dad,” — fuck — “has an American accent?”, phew. “Because he grew up in America?” Nora squinted at me, as if I was stupid. “Yeah. Right, but does that mean you didn’t grow up in America?” She blinked slowly. Shit. All I did was take the scenic route to the same damn question, and I could tell she’d clocked me. “I grew up in Australia. Mum was from South Korea, if that’s what you want to know.” It was, but I couldn’t let her know that… for some reason. “Oh,” I said, as if it was a total surprise she’d bring it up. “That’s nice. Is she a nice lady?” What the fuck is wrong with me. “She was. She’s dead.” “No shit,” I said. I tapped my glass on hers. “Dead parents club.” WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH ME.

The next day I made her scrambled eggs with some toast and coffee then drove her to the aquarium. It was the last of my eggs, but she was worth the absolute slog of a drive to the next town over to get more food. The kitchen was almost empty anyway. When we got to the aquarium, I didn’t go inside with her. Not after last time. I said I wouldn’t mind driving her to her actual home—wherever that might be—but she said she had a show that day. While I could have argued that it wasn’t like they had throngs of visitors demanding the mermaid show, I wasn’t about to upset the one woman in the world who might consider having sex with me, so I nodded. When she got out of the car she smiled and kissed me on the cheek. She pulled back and looked at me with a serious expression. “Do you remember where you put that light I gave you last night?” “Yeah.” “Promise me you’ll wear it at night from now on.” Her eyes bore into mine, deep brown and full of warmth. There was a seriousness to the way she said it that was so unlike the rest of our conversations the night before. “Uh, S-sure,” I stammered awkwardly. The truth is, I would have worn a baseball cap that had “FISH FETISHIST” emblazoned across it, if it was Nora telling me to do it.

Well, it turns out it was true about him.” “What?” “That he’s…” —she leaned forward, whispering— “gay.” I put my empty glass on the bench and raised my hands in faux shock, shaking them gently. “Oh noooo,” I said sarcastically, “Whatever shall we doooo?” She pursed her lips. “Well, don’t come crying to me when you get stabbed or something and he can’t do anything ‘coz he’s making heart eyes at the guy who stabbed you.” God, what a bitch. “You really need to get out and see the world. I don’t know where you got your information about gay people from, but it’s embarassing.” I picked up my empty glass. “I’m going to get a drink.” She grabbed at my arm again and stuck out her chest. “You should get me one.” Her lipgloss was shiny, and it would have been pretty if anything that came out of her mouth wasn’t so vile. “Use your crash money to buy it yourself.” I went to pull away. “Come on,” she pleaded. “How often do you get to buy a sexy girl a drink?” I tried pulling away again. “When the opportunity arises I’ll let you know.”

“Be careful!” she called with a smile, “That’s a splash zone!” I moved two rows back. “So’s that!” She dived into the water, and was true to her word. I got splashed, but not very much. Her tail was mesmerising. I tried talking myself into finding the show to be dull and boring, or even weird, but the truth is: it wasn’t. The performer was actually pretty good. Maybe I’m just easily impressed but she seemed to be able to hold her breath for ages, and was able to do things like blow a bubble ring and then another ring through it. I mean, I’ve seen people do that with smokes but it’s way more intriguing when I’m not being assaulted by the smell of an ashtray. Even more impressive were the acrobatics. She had to have been made of rubber. Her back arched like scoliosis had never been invented, and she could twist and flip in ways I only thought possible when playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2. My disbelief had absolutely been suspended, because I caught myself thinking I bet she’d be popular with the dude mermaids. I scolded myself for being fucking cringe.
