“The whole system is messed up. I wish I would’ve known I didn’t have to pick him up from that hospital when I did. He was an adult, I didn’t have to do anything. I could’ve just left him there so they’d have to keep monitoring him on those meds, keep giving him therapy, something. I don’t know, maybe it would’ve made a difference.” Realizing I wasn’t the only one haunted by the decisions I’d made, I found a bittersweet comfort in knowing we all wished we’d made different choices along the way, choices that may have changed the outcome. I thought about those Choose Your own Adventure books I’d loved when I was younger, where you got to choose what happened next in the story by turning to a different section of the book depending on which choice you made. If you wound up being unhappy with the outcome, you could just turn back the pages and make a different choice, get a different outcome. I realized we were all just wishing we could turn back the pages.

For the first few years Samantha kept up with the Sunday brunches, taking the quick train ride into the city and back, but then the babies started coming. The first one wasn’t so bad. Sure, Samantha had taken a few weeks off while recovering from childbirth and settling into her new role as a mom. But she adjusted relatively quickly (likely having something to do with having a maid to do the all the housework while she focused on the baby and, as her husband delicately put it, “getting out of those fat jeans” and back to her pre-baby weight), and would just bring Molly with her, strapped in one of those baby wrap things, and sip her mimosas over Molly’s little blonde curls. She was thrilled when her doctor told her pump and dump was mostly a myth and, as long as she wasn’t feeling the effects of the alcohol, a drink or two wouldn’t hurt her breastmilk. Lydia wasn’t so sure this was accurate but would only say so to me. She would never dare to even suggest to Samantha how she should parent. Which was wise. Motherhood hadn’t softened Samantha. If anything, it had made her more no non-sense then ever and she would likely rip Lydia’s head off and use the blender to turn it into organic baby food. Molly was honestly such a good baby and mostly slept, the rest of the brunch crew barely even noticing she was there.

For months after that I couldn’t even go in my own bedroom. I moved my dresser into the living room of my basement apartment in the city and kept the door to my bedroom shut. It was dead to me. I was dead to me. I didn’t know who I was anymore or how to trust anyone. Most of all I didn’t know how to trust me. It was my fault. I flirted with him. I let him in to my apartment after we’d been drinking. I thought I’d made the lines clear but I must not have. Somehow it was my fault. My home wasn’t safe anymore. I wasn’t safe anymore. The air constantly felt heavy. Heavy to breathe. Heavy on my skin. Just this constant weight, threatening to suffocate me at any moment. Around every corner was danger. I could try to keep explaining how it felt but, the truth is, if you’ve never experienced it there are no words that will do it any justice. To help you understand what it feels like to want to rip off your own skin and leave your body. Not to die. Not at all. But to live without having to do it inside the scene of the crime. My body was a walking crime scene. And all I wanted to do was burn it down.

I settled on Billy Joel and hoped the lyrics wouldn’t be lost on him. “I realize how cheesy this is but -” Marc grinned. “Cheesy is one of your sexiest qualities.” “Thank you,” I replied with a slight bow as Just the Way You Are began to play. “I agree.” I began quietly singing along. “You have a much better singing voice then I do,” Marc commented as he stood, reaching for my hand. “May I have this dance?” I smiled and allowed him to gently pull me to my feet and into his arms. “Not sure how this will go. A little worried I might trip on you.” “No problem,” I gently laughed. “It’ll cover up my own bad dancing.” We swayed together like that, my head on his shoulder as he had one hand on my hip, the other gently on the back of my head, his fingers tangled up in my hair. He took a deep breath in as he closed his eyes, enveloped in the jasmine scent of my shampoo. As the song ended we could hear Fly With Me wafting up from downstairs. Marc twirled and dipped me. “Taking it back old school, huh?” “Grams loves Sinatra. I’m pretty sure he’s her one-who-got-away,” I joked. Marc held me close as we continued to move with the music and I prayed for that moment to last forever.

Gabriel turned to face me, blocking my path, and forcing me to stop dead in my tracks. His eyes were wide as he exclaimed, “Who? Did you seriously just ask me ‘who’? You work in entertainment, you need to know who Pharrell is! Besides, he seems to know who you are.”          I turned to look in the direction Gabriel was pointing. In the VIP section, behind the rope and a handful of massive, scary looking, security guards, surrounded by some of the most attractive women I’d ever seen, was this adorable little guy who was smiling and appeared to be waving at me.           “I’ve never seen that man before in my life.” I shrugged and kept walking as Gabriel began incredulously rattling off names of songs like they were questions.          “I Just Wanna Love You?”           “That’s Jay-Z,” I replied slowly, my brows drawing together, wondering how Gabriel could get that wrong.          "Featuring Pharell!" he shrieked, my eyes widening as I looked back at him trying to keep up with my pace. “Beautiful?” he added more calmly but still appearing shocked.          “I’m guessing my response isn’t supposed to be ‘Snoop’?” Gabriel smirked as he made a rolling motion with his hand, indicating for me to keep going. “Featuring Pharell?”          “Bingo!” he shouted with something concerningly close to jazz hands. “And your precious Britney Spears? He produced some of her songs. And songs for Nelly, Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani. Where have you been?”

Struck by Drew’s wavy blonde hair, sky blue eyes, and dimples that would make any Cabbage Patch Doll jealous, I immediately slid closer to him, batting my eyelashes and biting the corner of my lower lip, as I suggested we bet on who the bartender would finally come over to first. Loser paid for the winner’s drink. Drew eagerly accepted my bet, which he won about thirty seconds later. Looking down at my low cut tank, I wondered if maybe I’d paired it with the wrong bra, not giving myself enough cleavage. I wasn’t usually known to stand out in a crowd but, even so, male bartenders typically served cleavage first. I’d been convinced I’d win that bet, for sure. As I had flashbacks to being called President of the Itty Bitty Titty committee in high school, I watched Mr. Hunky Bartender lean across the bar and lock lips with Drew in the kind of kiss that’s usually the start of something more suitable for Porn Hub or Only Fans. When he finally came up for air, Drew properly introduced himself to me, explaining that he comes to Off the Wagon often because “I like to get on his wagon.” I also learned that Mr. Hunky Bartender did, indeed, have an Only Fans. While disappointed that I clearly wasn’t Drew’s type (or the bartenders), that night was still the beginning of something very special. Drew and I have been inseparable ever since.

I laid back down, pulled the covers up to my chin and grabbed the remote.  It was Thanksgiving, after all.  There had to be good reruns or a movie on somewhere. House marathon.  Judge someone-or-other trying to figure out why some fifteen-year-old pregnant girl is being sued by her baby daddy and why her mother is on his side.  Where was While You Were Sleeping and You’ve Got Mail?  Why wasn’t TBS running its usual Meg Ryan/Sandra Bullock love-a-thon?  What a freaking disappointment.   I slowly pulled myself out of bed and held onto the wall as I made my way into the kitchen.  Flipping on the TV in the living room as I passed through, I decided on a marathon of the Friends Thanksgiving episodes.  I threw an English Muffin in the toaster, poured a glass of apple cider and collapsed on the couch.  An hour and three Motrin later, feeling stir crazy, I headed out to the cemetery, the place I was able to find the most peace those days.

This didn’t seem like a decision that should be made lightly.  Or while half-drunk off mimosas with three busybody friends expectantly staring at us.  “We should probably talk about this another time,” I suggested while reaching for the chocolate croissants.  “A few weeks, at least.  They say not to make any major life decisions while Mercury is in retrograde.” “Actually,” Lydia chimed in, “the last retrograde ended in April.  Mercury won’t be in retrograde again until July.” “Well, isn’t that good news,” I exclaimed with a fake smile stretched so tightly across my face, I imagined I looked something like The Joker’s more horrifying sister.  I should’ve known that hippie bitch would know the retrograde dates off the top of her head. The universe couldn’t have thrown me a bone just this once?

Lydia was happy to become part of The Brunch Bunch but couldn’t accept the clear tension between Samantha and me.  For weeks she’d spend most of the time we were eating trying to find common ground between us, encouraging acceptance and love and all sorts of other hippy shit.  The truth is, we did eventually grow on each other.  I was livid when she suggested a new brunch place one week, as if she had any say in organizing.  This was our thing, mine and Drew’s.  She was just along for the ride.  But, as always, Drew and Lydia encouraged me to be more open minded (Drew might have phrased it as “less of a bitch” but, same thing) so I acquiesced.  One bite into the lemon ricotta pancakes and short rib tater tots at Sarabeth’s and even I couldn’t argue.  We had found a new go-to spot. And I had found a new friend.  Anyone who could introduce me to food that delicious couldn’t be an enemy.  My stomach wouldn’t allow it.

There were no words to describe what I was feeling.  It was the kind of pain, an immense aching, that left you crippled, physically and emotionally.  I slid onto the floor of the shower, huddled in the corner, curled up on top of myself. “Where the fuck are you? Why aren’t you here?  You fucking coward!”  I rested my head on the glass of the shower door and envisioned myself smashing my head through it, ending my misery.  In my heart, I knew I could never end my own life, no matter how much I may want to.  I knew all too well what it felt like to be the one left behind.  Instead, I lay there, underneath the stream of hot water mixed with tears, and prayed.  I prayed for divine intervention to take over and take me.  I prayed for merciful death until I fell asleep, there against the shower door.   I woke up drenched and cold, the hot water having run out.  I forced myself to get up and dry off, acutely aware of the overwhelming sense of defeat I felt in my soul.

Isn’t that the American Dream?” Drew interrupted to point out that he didn’t think that applied here but I carried on like I hadn’t heard him. “We both want kids, right? And the older we get, the harder it will be to run after them. We have similar values, we’re good people. We both put back our shopping carts when we’re done with them and pick up trash we see lying around. We both vote blue and love musicals and hate that anyone actually considers anything by Beyonce to be legitimate country music.” Drew shuddered. “I love me some Queen Bey. But, it’s like she took every country stereotype she could think of and threw them into a song about gibberish.”

“How are you feeling?” “I need to get out of this place. I wish they’d just let me leave.” “You’ll leave when you’re ready.” Anne sat down on the edge of his bed and poked around at the food left on his tray. “Sorry I didn’t bring you anything this time. This shit looks gross. You need to just focus on your PT and listening to the doctors.” Marc rolled his eyes. “Okay, mom. I spend most of the day in this stupid fucking chair. If they let me go home I could do more. I’d get better faster.” “Do what?” Anne shot back. “You can’t do anything on your own. What is it you think you’d do if you went home? Just stop being so stubborn and accept their help. They know what they’re doing.” “How much longer are they estimating it’ll be before you can go home?” I sat next to Anne on the bed and picked up Marc’s Jello, super excited when he nodded his consent. I couldn’t remember the last time I had Jello. “Another month, maybe,” Anne answered for him. “Depends how much progress he’s making.” “Yea, but how can I make progress when they leave me sitting here?” Marc raised his voice at the last few words, clearly intending for the nurses in the hallway to hear him. “I’m not allowed to get up and walk if there’s no staff here with me because they’re afraid I might fall,” he added in my direction. “Well, I’m sorry to say but that kinda sounds fair.” “Whose side are you on anyway, Red?”   I instinctively reached up and touched my hair. I’d forgotten I’d died it since the last time he saw me. Every now and then I got bored and I’d learned that dying my hair was way easier to fix if I didn’t like it than it was to repair spontaneous, emotionally inspired, bangs. Which never look good on anyone and yet, we just keep doing it.

The world was suddenly spinning as my legs gave out and I collapsed on the stairs, my non-fat raspberry mocha spilling onto my brand new, white, BCBG dress. The one I’d bought specifically for the Diesel party later that night at Rock Bar (and kept the tickets attached and safety pinned inside the dress so I could return it after.) It was my first year there and I was determined not to stand out as a Fashion Week virgin. Or as the poor one. I could certainly party like a rock star I just couldn’t afford to be one, and I’d spent all my money on the shoes. The dress was simple; strapless, with a short, bias cut, and somehow managed to say sophisticated rocker chick. Or maybe Park Avenue Coke Addict? Either way, it was now covered in coffee and I was pretty sure I couldn’t pass it off as a cutting-edge design. Or return it.

After graduation, we got an apartment together in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the up-and-coming place to be for creatives, an absolute necessity if I wanted to make it as a writer, which is all I’d really wanted to do since I learned how to hold a crayon. As an engineer (mechanical, not on the railroad), with a brand-new, shiny job in Manhattan, telling men twice her size how to build bridges while her auburn braids stuck out from underneath her hard hat, Anne just appreciated the quick commute to the city without paying city sized rent. Over the years, we’d become more like sisters than friends, the poor man’s Paris and Nicole (we actually almost had our own reality show when a guy I knew introduced us to a guy he knew who was a producer and thought we were hilarious. But I got cold feet at the idea of every stupid thing we’ve ever done being immortalized forever and backed out. Thank god I grew up before social media). I honestly couldn’t remember what life was like before Anne. Leaving her behind in New York had been the hardest part of deciding to move to Florida but our friendship thrived despite the distance. We could survive anything.

I stared at that shirt for what seemed like hours, trying to decide what to do next. I felt myself move slowly towards it and lift it out of the box. I lifted it to my face and took a deep breath in, closing my eyes and feeling my muscles relax as my brain registered the smell. Armani and cigarettes. Marc. The shirt still smelled like Marc. I took off my pajamas and crawled into his shirt, wrapping it around me like a security blanket, letting his scent rub off on my skin. I climbed into bed on my hands and knees, like a two-year-old who just got her first big girl bed, and curled up in the fetal position, trying to fit as much of myself as I could inside of his shirt. I let the tears run down my face until I fell asleep.

I’d grown accustomed to my life of luxury in South Beach, living in an apartment on the bay, coming home from work and sitting out by the pool with a glass of wine, watching the sun set over the water while the boats went by. I went to awards shows and Fashion Week as part of my job. I was on the speed dial of every local male model and had a closet full of designer fashions I wouldn’t have even been able to pronounce a few months ago. If the cool kids who used to shove me into my locker could see me now. I hadn’t been ready to give it all up to go back to a dingy, basement apartment that I would have to share with roommates of both the human and rodent kind. And probably a bathtub in the kitchen. God, Friends had really given people the wrong impression of what living in New York in your twenties looked like.
