Cathay Williams was born enslaved at the Johnson plantation, until it was captured by Union forces. She secretly enlisted in the army, pretending to be a man. She was the first black woman and only documented woman to serve during the American Indian wars.

Surya Varuna Claudine Bonaly is a retired figure skater & 3 time World silver medalist. At the 1992 Olympics she became the 1st woman to attempt a quadruple jump in Olympic figure skating. She is the only Olympic figure skater to land a backflip on one blade; she performed it at the 1998 Olympics.

Robert Smalls was born into slavery. During the Civil War, he commandeered a Confederate ship & sailed it from the Confederate-controlled waters to the U.S. blockade that surrounded it. He then piloted the ship to the Union-controlled enclave thus, freeing himself, his crew, and their families.

W.E.B. Du Bois was the first Black American to earn a PhD from Harvard University, Du Bois was also a founding member of the NAACPand eventually the NAACP's director of publicity and research and starting the organization's official journal, The Crisis, in 1910.

The United Missionary Society, a black group founded by James W.C. Pennington, helped raise money for the return of thirty-five of the survivors to Sierra Leone in 1842.[3]

William Wells Brown was an African American antislavery lecturer, groundbreaking novelist, playwright, and historian. He is widely considered to have been the first African American to publish works in several major literary genres.

Hiram Rhodes Revels was an American elected by the Mississippi legislature to the United States Senate to represent Mississippi in 1870 and 1871 during the Reconstruction era, he was the first African American to serve in either house of the U.S. Congress.

August Wilson was a playwright referred to as the "theater's poet of Black America". He is best known for a series of plays, called The Pittsburgh Cycle. Plays included Fences which won a Pulitzer Prize and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. In 2006, Wilson was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame
