Finches are on the move! Excited to see some Evening Grosbeaks in CNY today. Is there a particular winter finch you are hoping to see this year?

The differences in coloration in the White-throated Sparrow is pretty fascinating.
This change isn’t just in their color, but also behaviorally.

White-morphs tend to be bolder and sing more. The tan-morph tends to be more passive, sing less and provide most of the parental care in the pair.

Birdtober Day 4: Extravagant Tail
Scissor-tailed Flycatcher
This gorgeous Flycatcher is home to the open Great Plains, often seen perched on a fence post. Named after its large forked tail which allows it great maneuverability in the air, aiding in it catching aerial insects.

Birdtober Day 3: Pollinator
While when you think of pollinators, insects will often be first of mind, but birds can also fill this very important ecological role.

In the deserts of the Southwest, White-winged Doves and Gila Woodpeckers can be important pollinators for the Saguaro Cactus. #birds

Birdtober Day 2: Sparrow
This medium-sized Sparrow is pretty dapper looking with their bold facial markings and bold black throat and breast.
Found in shrubby desert areas in its range, often on the ground as it forages for seeds and insects.

Birdtober is officially here! I chose the theme of western North American birds. I ended up deciding on the Steller's Jay, specifically the interior populations with the extra white facial markings.

Just saw another picture that shows that the hybrid jay does have a complete bib, here’s an updated illustration!

Couldn’t resist drawing the new bird hybrid discovered in Texas! This bird was hatched from a Blue Jay and a Green Jay. Due to climate change, both species range has recently overlapped in a small area in Texas. Second photo credit to Brian Stokes, who discovered this cool hybrid.

Another species that you tend to hear more than see. This elegant sparrow of the open meadows and prairies is a combo of light browns, tan and yellow. While it is often low to the ground, when they sing they will often perch out on an exposed perches to sing their insect-like song.

The annual tradition of Birdtober is continuing for another year! I will post the prompt list and details on September first. Birdtober, inspired by inktober, inspires bird nerds to draw a bird daily in October from the prompt list. #birds #art #birdart #birdlover

What a cute little warbler!
This bird can be found in high-elevation coniferous forests in a narrow range between Arizona, New Mexico down into Mexico.
Because their preserved habitat is mature forests, logging poses a huge threat to their populations.

This little vireo species is classified as Endangered and has a very narrow range, primarily only being found in scrubby oak habitats. They are particularly susceptible to brood-parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds.

Art for this species will be available in shop shortly!

Excited to be able to take my own measurments and references to make sure my Lifesize birds are truly Lifesize. After taking many measurements, I take a picture of the preserved specimen next to a quarter to compare to my sketches and outlines. Part of the prep work for my next piece. #birds #art
