When should founders start thinking of M&A?

▶️ If you've raised VC & are post seed, then you absolutely have to start planning

▶️ M&As are rare - only 2.3% end up being acquired

▶️ starting early, being clear on capabilities & building relationships increase your chances

First, it started as a whisper, now a murmur—and when you hear the roar, it's too late

Venture capital is shifting as LPs question returns, incentives, and its core foundations.

There are 2 types of new founders aspiring to build venture scale businesses

1️⃣ have multiple term sheets B4 starting out &

2️⃣ will spend yrs hustling unsuccessfully to raise

Over the past few months, my networking has shifted from seeking people who can help my goals to building a network

Sounds same but a big difference btw

‼️ Get to an event, identify relevant targets to "pitch" & farm contact details

Founders and investors need to be more proactive in achieving soft landing for zombie startups

It’s irresponsible to leave employees & customers in the cold just because it’s no longer “venture scale”

Spent the weekend outdoors, running and enjoying good weather on the beach

Bring on the work week

The power law is failing average VCs

These two charts are exactly the same returns profile - 3.2x

One is elusive and one is more achievable

I believe VC will move towards a normal returns profile over the next few years

Founders get flak for being delusional, chasing unicorn dream that is out of reach to 99%

Looking at the numbers, it's same with investors

❌ 75% of VC funds can't beat S&P 500

❌ Loads of zombie VCs - taking meetings but run out of funds and can't raise another fund

#1 job as a founder is to just hang in there

Stay in the game and eventually you catch a break

On Tuesday, a SF AI-founder was arrested for defrauding investors by misrepresenting revenue and metrics while fundraising ‼️

Investors should bear a lot of the blame for not conducting basic due diligence 🔍

It takes a deeply delusional character to be a startup founder

Yes, the highs are great but 4 years into my journey, the lows have nearly destroyed me
I’ve experienced it all:

✅ Failing to raise funding
✅ Getting into personal debt
✅ Product issues

What failures have you experienced?

Difficult to understand how well funded startups are unable to turn a profit

ServiceTitan just filed for IPO

Loss making despite $1.5bn raised and 12 years in existence

ReInvesting cash at early stage to turbo charge growth is understandable

But a mature company?

Where does it stop?

One of the biggest misconceptions about entrepreneurship is that it is an “easy win”

Most success founders have to struggle for many years before succeeding

If you’re just starting out, don’t get discouraged when things go against you

Just keeping going
