My father was a mime, and to him and all the clowns and street performers Chaplin was basically royalty. I was shocked as an adult to learn he had haters. I think part of the problem is people don't realize how skilled he was. He makes it look easy but it's not.

I think many people don't know what empathy means to begin with. They feel pity, tinged with fear and disgust at the thought of their own vulnerability. Better than nothing I guess, but empathy, when it occurs, is something that happens to you, often by surprise. Decency is something you can do.

I grew up in that district and I honestly don't know what to do about that situation, and I'm glad to live elsewhere now frankly, but I found him so disappointing because those people need direction away from their ignorance, not someone to tell them how great they are. That sounds awful. Oh well
