Bob Marley was born today (Feb 6) back in 1945. I'm glad i got to meet him in 1980. I was doing my grad research in Kingston, Jamaica and, in the midst of food shortages, brought for him from Canada a sack of rice & a jug of cooking oil. #music #reggae #Jamaica #BobMarley #birthday

I've always been entranced by storm photos: probably goes back to childhood screenings of "The Wizard of Oz"... Here's one of the winners of Canadian Geographic's Canadian Photos of the Year -- Craig Boehm. #photography #photos #weather

Brillliant! The story of a mega fire, the science of huge fires in the era of climate change and so much more. It's a terrific read. #climate #fire #LA #climatecrisis

Garth Hudson, the last surviving member of The Band, the influential & wonderful 60s band, has died. Up the street from me here in Toronto is this plaque. And here's one of their great songs, "The Weight." www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFqb... #music #rock #sixties

Although not the same shape nor the same composition, your photo reminded me of one of many of Cezanne's paintings of Mont Saint-Victoire. #art #photography #painting

Rereading Wilkie Collin's "The Woman in White" I'm struck again by a man in 1860 passionately writing about the lack of rights women had. And he did this while inventing (along with "The Moonstone") the mystery genre. He was born 201 years ago. #womensrights #books #librarians #fiction 🖋️📚💙

Mangroves are more than just coastal trees—they are biodiversity hotspots, climate defenders, and community lifelines. They store carbon 10x more effectively than terrestrial forests, & protect 15M+ people from floods annually. Check out www.linkedin.com/company/save...

@emilyrcwilson.bsky.social 's translation of "The Odyssey" If you've never read it, this is the one to read. If you've read "The Odyssey" before, this will be a revelation. And don't skip the terrific introduction.

There are no "two side" to the "debate" on #climatechange. It is here, it is now, and it's causing disasters. We've now passed the 1.5C heating increase. www.theguardian.com/environment/... #climatecrisis #science

Magnificent! I can imagine @harkaway.bsky.social 's excitement + trepidation when he set out to write "Karla's Choice". The result? Tone perfect. Complex. Gripping. A tribute to his father, as well as to his own skill. I hope more are coming. 📚💙 #Booksky #books #writers #libraries #bookstores

I promise I'm not going to start posting cat/dog/goldfish pictures no matter how absolutely cute, but we did have this visitor for Christmas dinner who didn't seem to understand why he was only given kibble.

4/4 I'd love to know what you think. Does what's brilliant in this #book outweigh any limitations? How important is character development in #SciFi & #fantasy? And if this is one of your fave books, I know how good that can feel & I respect you. What classics do you love/hate?📚🪐💙 #booksky #library

3of4 I'm sure that's good enough for many readers & I truly respect those of you who love it! But for me, I want fiction with compelling characters. Sadly Liu's felt wooden & there's no real character development. For me, it reads like a very imaginative physics text. 📚🪐💙 #SciFi #books #libraries

2of4 The good: It asks a very big question: is the human species worth saving? + Good stuff on Chinese cultural revolution. + Tons of interesting #science. + Very clever moments, inc. a brilliant scene where a computer is created from an army of medieval Chinese soldiers. 📚🪐💙 #SciFi #books
