On the second day of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, RIA Novosti, a Russian state-owned news agency, published an article titled ‘Russia’s offensive and the new world,’ which claimed that “a new world is being born before our eyes: Ukraine as ‘anti-Russia’ has ceased to exist and has been reintegrated into the Russian world.” (Footnote 3) The article was quickly removed when it became clear that the ‘special military operation’ was not progressing as planned. Despite its removal, the article exemplifies key narratives of the full-scale invasion presented by the Kremlin. It frames the ‘new world’ envisioned after the invasion as Ukraine’s return to the ‘Slavic brotherhood’ of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. The author argues that the West lacked the power to keep Ukraine in its sphere of influence and now must accept that Russia has reclaimed what is rightfully its own. Indeed, the article presents Russia’s expansion as a restoration of the natural geopolitical order, one that should not be resisted by Europeans or Ukrainians, who are considered part of the Russkiy Mir. This idea, long promoted by Russian national-conservative circles, (Footnote 4) has been normalized in Kremlin discourse since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

The cat is not plugged in
On a made bed lies a scratching pad on which partially lies a grey/brown and white tabby. The pad is slightly aske wundedr the cat's weight, making it look like it is in high gravity. She is on her side, ears pointing toward the camera and eyes and face off camera. Looking closely at her eyes it's immediately clear there is nobody home. Nobody. Her entire body is relaxed, molten, without might. In front of her and her overlayed fore legs is a hard catnip mouse toy which is NOT the reason for this. Behind her lazily resting white back legs, over which her tail dark-brown tail is draped, is a small rectangular box that has a dent in it, a previous victim of Gravity Cat

Janhunen, 1 Olesya Khanina 1, 3 Matti Miestamo 1 Johanna Nichols 1, 4, 5 Janne Saarikivi 1 and Kaius Sinnemäki 1 1 University of Helsinki 2 University of Vienna 3 Russian Academy of Sciences 4 University of California 5 HSE University The widespread Uralic family offers several advantages for tracing prehistory: a firm absolute chronological anchor point in an ancient contact episode with well-dated Indo-Iranian; other points of intersection or diagnostic non-intersection with early Indo-European (the Late Proto-IndoEuropean-speaking Yamnaya culture of the western steppe, the Afanasievo culture of the upper Yenisei, and the Fatyanovo culture of the middle Volga); lexical and morphological reconstruction sufficient to establish critical absences of sharings and contacts. We add information on climate, linguistic geography, typology, and cognate frequency distributions to reconstruct the Uralic origin and spread. We argue that the Uralic homeland was east of the Urals and initially out of contact with Indo-European. The spread was rapid and without widespread shared substratal effects. We reconstruct its cause as the interconnected reactions of early Uralic and Indo-European populations to a catastrophic climate change episode and interregionalization opportunities which advantaged riverine hunter-fishers over herders.
